Who doesn’t love a good behind the scenes and general FAQ? 😉 I know I do!
Behind the Scenes
Being a work-at-home mom means learning to balance both kids and work (literally). I’ve had to get good at balancing a baby on one leg and a laptop on the other. Oh, and typing with one hand!
Below shows my goodies from the first brand I ever worked with. They offered to give me some free socks in exchange for posting about them. I remember exactly how I felt when I got that email. I thought I made it haha! It’s what kicked off the future of my brand partnerships because I started to see more and more that this was actually possible. Oh, and here’s that first post for those that are curious!
At the beginning of my business, I didn’t have a lot of extra money for clothes, so I had to get creative by making them, plus, I thought it was fun. I would take my sister’s old clothes or scour Goodwill to find clothes to upcycle. I was my own little fashion designer!
My sweet husband and my sweet Will! Titus has been there from the beginning, helping me out and yep, even lint rolling my clothes for photo shoots haha! Will has learned to do this as well, just by watching his daddy. I certainly feel like a queen to be so taken care of and supported. We’ve started to pay Will (50 cents haha) for his help in the “family” business.
On day 3 I talked about all the work that taking photos entailed when we didn’t have a home that allowed us to take good pictures. It was basically like moving my closet outside.
I’ve got about a million photos on my phone like the one below. I would (still do) try on my outfits and take pictures of them so I remembered how I wanted to style them later. I’ve always got a photo bomber in them! I’m about 10 weeks pregnant with photobomber #2 in that photo. 😉
There’s mama…just doing her thing. And oh, what do you know? Will is there too! 😉
Keeping it going, even while I’m cooking baby #2! But don’t worry. I found times to rest too. 🙂
Oh, the reality of what taking pictures with a kid was like!
FAQ
Who takes your pictures?
Titus takes them! Truthfully, he didn’t really like it at first but hiring a photographer wasn’t an option so he semi reluctantly obliged. Now, he actually enjoys it. Not to the point where he wants to pursue photography or anything, but it sure makes our photo-taking days a better experience for all. 🙂
Does Titus work with you?
Yes and no. He has a full-time job, but he does work for MCO too. It’s not seen as “my thing” anymore. It’s ours. He of course doesn’t do any writing or anything remotely related to fashion (ha! That would be funny!), but he takes pictures and handles back-end things like contracts, finances, and other business things I find too boring to even type here!
How do you make money?
Like any other magazine, a large part of my income comes from advertising. So every time you let an ad load on my page, I get paid for that and it helps keep this going! I also make money through product sales, brand collabs, and affiliate sales.
How much do you work?
It’s hard to say because I don’t really keep track. Usually, it’s just stolen moments between raising my kiddos or nights and weekends when Titus is done working. Each week is different but maybe around 20-30 hrs/week. Some less. Some more. It depends on what I have to do that week. I have hired an assistant (more on that on day 5), and she’s amazing, shaving off 8-9 hrs/week of what I would normally do.
Where do you like to shop?
Okay, not business-related, but I do get asked this quite a bit! Some of my favorite places are Madewell, Everlane, J.Crew, H&M, TJMaxx, Quince, and Amazon.
Speaking of places that I like to shop, this brings us to today’s prize!
Thursday’s Prize: Gold-Plated Hoops + Gold-Plated Necklace Set + 100% Cashmere Scarf
These are a few of my favorite things. La la la la la. That’s me singing. Julie Andrews style.
*I used my own scarf to photograph
One of my favorite simple styling tips that I talk about frequently on this blog is adding simple, gold jewelry to your outfit. It can dress up even your most basic tee and it’s one of the easiest ways to add some style and interest to your outfit! I’m giving you my personal favorite pieces that I wear over and over again. Okay, not personal personal…don’t worry; I bought you new ones!
This toggle chain necklace set can be worn together or separately. Oh, the possibilities! I love to mix and match and layer with my other jewelry too.
These gold earrings are a staple. In my opinion, they are some of the best hoops. Not too small, not too big, and they’re not heavy. The jewelry is from Madewell so it’s, high-quality, gold-plated, and sustainable, ensuring it’ll last you for many, many years.
Now let’s talk about this scarf. 100% Grade A cashmere. Every girl needs a little bit of cashmere in her wardrobe and this neutral and luxurious scarf will make you look oh so effortlessly chic this fall and winter.

What I’ve found most helpful is the photo combinations of outfit ideas. This has given me ideas on how to style what I already have in a different way. An example would be…how to mix patterns in a subtle but modern way.
I also love the home improvement ideas and how to projects. There have been some great and doable projects to inject style into my home that doesn’t cost a boat load of money or hiring an expensive designer.
I like seeing how others style their clothes. I get ideas and think of items (jewelry, scaves and handbags) that I already own and are similar to upgrade my clothing. Thank you for the brilliant ideas.
I’m 69 but feel the need to keep checking in on fashion to avoid the dreaded(in my case anyway) old lady look. Some younger fashion bloggers are just too outside my comfort zone with their choices. I need classic style but youthful I feel that works best for me. Loved your backstory video on taking pics with baby. Enjoy your diy. Glad your family is “all in” on your business. It’s a game changer.
I love the outfit ideas and how you show us how to style one item in many ways. I am really hoping I win this, as I adore gold jewelry and would LOVE to feel fancy in a cashmere scarf! Thanks so much for offering giveaways this week; I have really enjoyed learning more about you and your business!
MCO has helped me define my style and edit my closet. I am a 30 something administrator at a school. Because of MCO, I now have signature colors, signature patterns, and signature accessories. I like clean, solid fall jewel tones colors, with understated accessories. When I go shopping now, I have a filter for purchasing clothes: is is high quality? Is it a color I wear? Does it match my style?
MCO has given my confidence, given me purpose for my style and helped me look professional!
My style is very similar to yours. I use to think “how boring I am”. But now I realize the way I dress is beautiful and chic.
Oh, wow!- You’ve certainly helped my fashion life! I can connect with your advice 100% in my daily life. I’m a hairdresser, which makes me feel I should be fashion forward. In real life, I just want to be comfy enough to have the energy to keep up with the pace of the day. I think you’ve added “simply luxurious” ideas. I’m not a trend setter by any means. Timeless, elegance, oozing from each piece head to toe w/o a caviar budget. I salute you in accomplishing this for me.
I loved the capsule wardrobe. It gives great ideas how to wear your existing clothes or consider what would be a good acquisition.
my favorite thing regarding photos and how it helps me is your pics have a lot of motion and love to them … so i try and recreate a look and realize in my mirror versus what the public sees are different … it’s inspiring … and i love simple classic and chic…
Reading your blog has given me the confidence to try new things and be more confident in what I wear. Thank you!
Oh my gosh! I’m not so terrified about putting together a look OR learning more about posting on my own Insta page. Thank you SO much for keeping this simple enough, so that even this newbie can practice what YOU preach!
MCO has helped me so much! I am very visual (Pinterest is my fav) so seeing how you style each piece is so helpful when I am getting dressed!
What I have found really inspirational from MCO is seeing clever ways you can take cool French style from the streets of Paris and relate it to what you might already have in your wardrobe but not considered putting together before
Genius!
Question: How has the information you learned at MCO helped your fashion life?
It has helped me to edit my closet…I would be lost without your guidance. Your pictures show me new ways to put together things that I already own, prevent me from buying things that I don’t need (saving money), and gives me confidence when I step out the door. Sometimes I will print out a certain picture and put it on a hanger with a “new” old outfit. Oh, by the way, I sure enjoyed your rehab of your kitchen….I did it too.
I’m a visual learner so the photos are key but the value In looking at the pictures lies not in just copying specific formulas for choosing basics or styling tips. Those are very helpful but I realized that I was also learning about proportion. This is very important for someone who is petite like me. Hemming pants or dresses is one thing but my natural tendency is to just brush off the fact that the sleeves of a shirt or the shirt tails might be too long and leave them as is or roll them up. I noticed in your photos that your clothes always seem to fit you perfectly. My eye has been retrained and I’ve started altering my clothes to fit me correctly and they do look much better on me.
Information is power and MCO has so much quality information, it makes fashion approachable and attainable. I feel my fashion sensibility has transformed through the way MCO has retrained me to think about my relationship to my closet. Looking effortless and cool is actually effortless now!
Gosh, you literally help me get dressed every day LOL! I print out your wardrobe ideas and hang them in my closet. It might seem laughable, but I’m a visual person and your boards help me see how to put together incredible outfits using the clothes I already have. I think that has been the biggest hurdle your website has helped me overcome… shopping my own closet (instead of buying just to buy ?) with fresh eyes and guided insight on what can go together!
My favorite articles are the Parisian ones! I have incorporated the French secrets into my fashion and copied the French outfit formulas.
I love how to style one item multiple ways!! That has really helped me.
MCO has served as a consistent inspiration for enhancing my “getting dressed” everyday! I so appreciate the simple approach and budget conscious. too.
You never cease to give me ideas on how to style my outfits!!!!!! I also love that your clothes are affordable!!!
MCO has helped my fashion life by inspiring me with new ideas. I love basic pieces, but oh how a scarf can add a little extra to any outfit!! I began following you because we are on the same page for simplistic, classic style. Everything French adds an exotic flare also. I found you on Pinterest and continue to follow because I enjoy your tips, recommendations, and product reviews. Keep on inspiring Carolyn, you are a gem:)
My Chic Obsession has helped me become more refined as a women daily. Though my style does not match yours exactly you’ve taught me to utilize staples and to form a reliable capsule wardrobe to find my own niche in the fashion world. When I first started shopping I’d pick things I like but they didn’t match with a lot of my wardrobe and then I’d regret buying it. Your blog has taught me to think more when shopping and has made it actually more fun to shop. MCO isn’t always about learning about fashion though, learning more about your story and your journey is also enjoyable and inspiring!
I have learned to keep it simple. I use to think my outfit had to standout, but a classy look with a little edge is the best. Usually the edge is an accessory and I use to make it the outfit.
When I decided to completely overhaul my wardrobe last year to “French Girl Style,” I came across MCO and have been following you ever since. Your real life examples of what pieces look like, how to style them, etc. have been incredibly helpful as I learn what looks best on me and what feels like my personal style. Your posts are fresh and honest. I usually look to see if you’ve posted something similar before purchasing items. You’re like my go-to friend for fashion and style.
How has the information I’ve learned at MCO helped my fashion life? HAHAHA! your website IS my fashion life! I know what I like, but i can’t seem to ‘put it all together’ A quick visit to your website and…problem solved!!! You’ve saved me from embarrassment and questioning myself. So…thank you (times a million!) 🙂
MCOs’ fashion advice has helped me realize that I can run to the store and easily put together an outfit that doesn’t make me look like a ragamuffin. You make it seem so easy and then it is! I am retired and turned in my go to business suits, so I had no idea where to go from there. I went from business suits to sweats when I came home for the day. Now I have learned how to actually be put together running errands. Thank you and keep doing what you do!
I was In a funk after menopause when I stumbled across your fall capsule on Pinterest and it just felt right! I have since learned so many ways to style my outfits to get back the confidence I lost when my body changed. Last week, two young adults actually told me how much they loved my outfit and my style. We talked about capsules, styling and small budgets.
I’m 66 now. I’ve learned that I’m never to old to keep learning how to dress better and to simplify my wardrobe. MCO is constantly helping me (re)discover who I am and what my true style is. I absolutely adore chic French style for the use of neutrals and simplicity in their outfits. Through the years, I’ve wandered away from my true style because of “fashion”. I don’t know about you, but that’s when I get myself in trouble every. single. time! LOL Thank goodness I found MCO to rein me back in to my own authentic style NOT “fashion”.
I’ve started taking photos of outfits that I’ve worn and quite liked. I always think I’ll remember how I put that amazingly wonderful outfit together. I have the photos to remind me that I don’t always remember that great outfit I loved wearing. So, thanks, Carolyn for suggesting, in one of your past posts, how important taking outfit photos can become in ones style evolution.
MCO has helped me visualize how to wear really classic pieces. I love seeing how you have styled things and then I know how I can style them as well!
I like to have your ideas about what to put together. I want to dress just like you! I’m going to be 67 in January.
MCO has provided a constant inspiration for how to put outfits together – particularly colour combinations that I would never have thought would go. And the French style chic flair is the absolute bonus on the top for me
I would say MCO has gotten me into wearing my tan/neutral colors. I always have love black and stripes but never considering adding neutrals until looking up your article on French essential items
The visuals on how to pull outfits together and make them look complete has been so helpful to me. Looking at color swatches put together has also helped greatly.
MCO has taught me how to make classy outfits out of the basics I already own, and how to add complimentary items to enhance them.
I learned to keep it simple, and also follow the shopping list that you provided helped a lot.
i just checked on the list a camel coat, a trench coat, combat boots, and wide legs jeans, it is so simple with a list i know exactly what to buy and this is fantastic because i don,t loose time to asking me questions and buy thing i don’t need.
Thank you so much.
Your blog has streamlined clothes shopping for me! I used to agonize over the simplest decisions, uncertain about colors, combinations, and price points. Now I’m much more decisive and deliberate when I shop and confident that I won’t be returning yet another bagful of clothes that don’t suit me! Thank you!
Showing simple pieces that work together.
Monochromatic outfits.
I have whittled down my clothing to have only pieces I really wear. Through MCO and also from staying home for most of 2020, I learned that I can live with less. The pieces I will add will be of good quality and play well with others….my goal.
I love how you keep everything simple. Seeing how you mix and match basics is so helpful. Thank you!
MCO has taught me that there’s beauty in simplicity. Great, classic style doesn’t have to be complicated and you have helped me by showing beautiful outfit combinations, and by showing me how to accent these outfits in subtle, but intentional ways. Thank you for all your hard work!!
Your posts have helped me focus on neutrals, solids, and quality over quantity. I like the pictures and shopping links. And by the way, I really liked the items I ordered from Quince. Even ordered a second time to get a beautiful cashmere v neck sweater for $50.00. Now we’re talking?
I’m 54 years of age, soon to be 55, and was only this year diagnosed with chronic, lifelong ADHD. As you can imagine, fashion generally, and choosing what to wear each day especially, has been an ongoing dilemma for over 40 years! When I chanced upon your site a few years ago I was overjoyed. Maybe now, I thought, I might be able to follow instructions and look half decent. I cannot tell you the many times I have been complimented for my style since then 🙂 thank you, thank you, thank you
I like when you have small summer wardrobe or such because it always me to understand what pieces I am missing in my closet.
MCO has shown me how to appreciate just what I have in my closet and how important those basic items are. I have always liked the French touch of simplicity and you do that perfectly. I come back to your blogs many times for inspiration and always find something new to interest me.
The information I have learned at MCO has helped me to focus on timeless and classic pieces that can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. Regardless of one’s budget, we can still feel and look great with Parisian Style. Looking fashionable does not have to be expensive with effortless chic outfits. I enjoy reading your blog which is very informational and interesting.
Your style is simple and classic with a good eye for detail. I love to see how you elevate basic pieces simply by how you style your outfit. I’ve learned so much about shopping my own closet and just changing up how I style pieces or adding accessories. This has saved me from chasing fad pieces that end up sitting in my closet.
I’ve enjoyed learning from your curated approach! It’s given me confidence to spend money on items that I really need or love.
I love the idea of a capsule wardrobe and creating a style that’s true to me! It’s a work in progress, but I’m always adding in tips from MCO!
I was raised by my Dad, a single parent, and my two older brothers. Growing up, I missed out on all that fun mother-daughter , or sister/sister sharing of learning to use make up and creating outfits. The visuals you provide have helped me develop a better “eye” for what works and what doesn’t. Your blogs about jewelry and accessories have helped me know what to buy that will work for many outfits rather than just one. Most importantly, I have gotten better at finding outfits that work on MY body vs. trying to copy something out of a magazine on a model that isn’t built like me. I don’t want to own a lot of clothes or jewelry. I just want a few good pieces that will work for a lot of different situations and I really like how you keep your style classic, with a bit of fun thrown in.
All the information is been useful and is kind of a hobby to read your post; your way to write is very focus, and clear to explain you make it fun and easy to remind tips of stylish
Very interesting! I find myself, at 65, enjoying very much putting my outfits together and following all the tips!
Showing ideas I can use with similar items I may have in my closet and how to mix and match…trying things a bit out of comfort zone…
I would have to say the most I have learned from MCO is the list of the 17 items needed to give your style a “French” look. The items you have listed helped me to complete my closet by only purchasing those articles of clothing. This is wonderful which keeps me from buying the pieces of clothing I actually need instead of “impulse buying”.
I love the French outfits you can copy. I’m still new to playing with and embracing fashion and style and it helps me to have a template to work from and see what I have already that could work.
MCO has taught me how to build my wardrobe with chic, basic pieces that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits. I used to wear whatever was trendy and had so many clothes but none that went together. Plus I kept having to buy new stuff to keep up with trends. Now I am building timeless, classic looks with quality pieces. I finally feel put together! And of course I’m building in some basic gold pieces.
My husband and I had a French river barge cruise planned for this past May. It got rescheduled to September and now rescheduled to September 2022. I came across your blog as I was researching how to dress in Paris. I love your passion for French and French fashion. The pictures of real people wearing outfits has been invaluable. I may not be going to France until next year, but I have my wardrobe and style ready!
I found some great prices on wardrobe pieces in your sale recommendations. I’m considering some of them.
I love how you mix and match basic pieces to make new outfits. How you style the same outfits in different ways by changing up the shoes, adding a scarf or jewelry. You seem to make a little go a long way 🙂
This blog taught me how to style simple outfits into looking better just by choosing better albeit simple items or accessories. It gave me style inspirations for all occasions and gave me an idea to what actually looks good from what i only think looks good. But most importantly, I learned to be confident in my own skin, because confidence makes an outfit look extremely better.
(Following as adarst213 on IG/Pinterest, my name on FB.) I’ve loved how you mix different pieces/styles to make the outfits your own! I try to mix it up in my daily outfits to create my own style. Thanks for the examples!!
