For Black Tie and Formal Events

Yes, you can wear a blazer to formal events as a woman! Mixing menswear and feminine style are very chic. When wearing your blazer to a formal event, the key is offsetting the menswear-inspired pieces with feminine details, such as heels, statement earrings, a beautiful clutch, a bold lip, and some extra bling bling! Check out this post for more ideas on how to do that.

For Work

For a polished ensemble, you could always get a set and wear your black blazer with matching suit pants, though it’s definitely not required to still look chic! Tailored dress pants are a good alternative.

For a more casual day in the office, you can pair your blazer with a skirt, a dress, or even sleek jeans, depending on your dress code. Blouses and crisp shirts will look good under your blazer and as far as footwear, you can’t go wrong with heels, loafers, or polished flats.

For a Night Out

A black blazer outfit can take you from day to night, the boardroom to the wine bar, with a few styling changes. For work, you may wear a blazer as a suit jacket, with matching black pants. But for night, it’s a good idea to separate those pieces and pair your black blazer with jeans instead.

Casual jeans, heels, and a tee with the pairing of a black blazer are a great way to look stylish when going out with your girlfriends. Not too formal and not too casual!

For Everyday Wear

For the ultimate chic and casual look, I’d recommend pairing your blazer with denim. In my opinion, this is one of the best ways on how to wear a black blazer! This blazer and jeans combination looks effortlessly chic and will never go out of style. And don’t even get me started on the versatility!

You can swap out your top, jeans (style and color), and shoes, for endless blazer outfits. Whether it’s a graphic tee, black shirt, white jeans, or my favorite, a striped tee, you can create countless black blazer combinations and nail a chic yet casual outfit.

I personally love a blazer with a crisp white shirt and ballet flats for a chic ensemble (pictured below), but for a more casual look, you can pair your blazers with simple white t-shirts instead.

The best outfit combination for Parisian inspired fashion would be a blazer + striped tee (or simple white tee) + cropped flared jeans + ankle boots.

For a model-off-duty look, you can pair your blazer with sweatpants, biker shorts, or even leggings. Yep, it can work!

So now, you may be wondering, “What type of blazer is right for me?”

As far as styles go, there are so many. There’s a formal blazer, an oversized blazer, fitted blazer, long blazer, cropped blazer, and even tweed blazers. Just for starters. So which one should you get? Well, the answer is, “it depends” and “multiple ones”. Does that help? 😉

Ultimately, it depends on your lifestyle as different types of blazers can work for different types of people and styles.

A formal blazer would be a better fit if you live a lifestyle of charity events and fancy weddings. An oversized blazer gives off a more casual vibe. A long blazer can be worn with leggings and thought of like an elevated basic. A tweed blazer is chic, but more of a fall/winter piece. You may find that just one suits your style better or that more than one is best for you!

Take your skin tone into consideration as well. Did you know that there are different shades of this staple black color?

According to color consultants, not every skin tone can wear black. As a general rule, a “winter” can wear black (i.e high contrast), while a “spring” can not. Thankfully, there are varying shades to help you find the right one for you, such as charcoal, jet black, and even pebble.

And if a slight pattern complements you better, that’s an option too, but try to steer clear from anything that’s too much of a statement print as we want to keep this a staple piece.

Keep your body shape in mind when shopping too.

According to White House Black Market blog, an inverted triangle body shape should avoid shoulder pads, a triangle shape should have defined shoulders, a rectangle shape should have a blazer with buttons, a petite frame should have a blazer with a fitted and tailored style, and an hourglass can get away with most anything!

Personally, I prefer a slightly oversized blazer as I feel that fits my casual chic style the best.
