When you’re getting started with your capsule wardrobe, it’s a great idea to have a few pieces that work for each season. You may run into trouble if your capsule wardrobe focuses too much on one season at the expense of the others. Imagine if all you had to wear were cable knit sweaters in July! In this post, I’ll be sharing a 10-piece wardrobe for summer. Each of these pieces is a must-have for any closet, even if it’s not a capsule one. This 10 piece wardrobe for summer also doubles as a packing list for any vacation too!

1. Linen (Pants, Dress)

When the temperatures start to rise, you want to put all your heavy materials and fabrics to the back of your wardrobe. It’s time to say goodbye to wool and the like until autumn calls! Linen is a go-to choice for summer clothing.

The material helps regulate your body temperature, and it doesn’t absorb moisture, meaning you don’t have to worry about sweat patches! Not only that, but linen is incredibly summer chic, wrinkles and all.

2. Straw/Wicker Handbag

Your 10 piece wardrobe for summer has to have a handbag. If you’re swapping the office for the beach, you don’t want to be lugging your backpack or tote bag around with you, do you? And not just any handbag will do, but you’ll quickly find that a straw/wicker handbag is a timeless classic that you’ll reach for every summer.

You can find them in every shape and size. Leather handles. No handles. Trim. No trim. There’s one for every personality! If you want to go for a vintage-inspired look, find a wicker handbag in a basket shape for ultimate French girl Jane Birkin vibes.

3. Denim Shorts

In addition to your heavy fabrics, another piece of clothing that you’ll find you wear less and less is jeans. Though they’re still handy to have nearby, you’ll definitely want to have denim shorts in your 10 piece wardrobe for summer.

While there are tons of short styles out there (even ones in linen!), denim shorts are super versatile for a capsule wardrobe. You can style your denim shorts just like you would a pair of jeans, and add anything from sweaters, tank tops, and blazers to add to your denim look!

4. Floral Maxi Dress

Maxi dresses are a summer staple. They’re easy to throw on and head out the door without thinking twice. If you have a summer wedding, a tropical holiday on the horizon, or even just lunch with your gal pals planned, you’ll want to have a maxi dress in a floral print in your wardrobe.

One benefit of maxi dresses is that they can double as a cover-up when you’re heading to the pool or the beach allowing you to hide a swimsuit underneath. With a maxi dress, you’ll be able to move around freely and look great while doing so!

5. Espadrilles

Your 10 piece wardrobe for summer needs at least one pair of chic shoes. While sneakers and sandals might be your go-to, we often forget that we need a dressier shoe that can elevate and add style to our looks.

Espadrilles are a pair of shoes that are easy to style and give any outfit a touch of Parisian chic. You can opt for a pair of slip-on espadrilles if you want a casual look or splurge on espadrille wedges if you find that you just can’t give up your high heels!

6. Swimsuit

What is summer without a dip in the ocean? Or more realistically, a pool? Even if it is a kiddie one in your backyard. 😉 No 10 piece wardrobe for summer is complete without a swimsuit!

It may go without saying, but you want to find one that you feel comfortable and confident in. Whether it’s a bikini set or a one-piece, choose one that you know you’ll want to wear. You can find one-piece swimsuits in neutral colors that will easily allow you to throw on a pair of denim shorts and call it a look, or you can go the two-piece route to easily mix and match.

7. Breezy Skirt (Knee Length or Midi)

Skirts are a go-to during summer. Comfortable, easy to style, and chic, yet they keep your legs ventilated so that you can stay cool as the temperatures start to climb. Skirts are generally very simple to style, and you can wear them with everything from a basic tee to a white blouse. Pick one up in your favorite color (or print) and wear it all summer long!

8. White Blouse

A white blouse is great to have in your summer wardrobe because it’s a color that goes with anything and instantly dresses up your bottoms. If you find that one of your biggest enemies during the summer is sweat then you may want to avoid anything super tight-fitting as it can quickly make you overheat. Flowy blouses, especially in white, are your best friend during summer as they’re breathable and will keep you feeling cool and looking good!

White blouses are especially a must-have if you’re traveling this summer because you can style them with anything in your 10 piece wardrobe for summer, cutting down on extra baggage. Denim shorts are a go-to choice, and you can pair your white blouse with a midi skirt too!

9. Light Cardigan, Cover-Up, or Layer

Although we think of summer as days spent sitting in the sun, it can still get chilly at times. If you’re a fan of after-dark walks or sunset beach strolls, you’ll want to have a cardigan, cover-up, or extra layer (like a linen blazer) in your 10 piece wardrobe for summer.

Choose a light cardigan that you can throw into your straw bag to take with you during the day to put on when the sun hides away. If you’re planning on spending the summer by the water, you’ll want to have a cover-up that you can wear over your swimsuit. At the same time, a chunkier sweater or a knit with holes will work, as long as it doesn’t look like it’s meant to be worn in fall instead.

10. A Hat

Don’t forget your hat! While we all know the importance of wearing sunscreen to protect our skin and to help with anti-aging, we sometimes forget about a hat. You can choose any style you like, but make sure that it offers some protection for your face.

More than just protection, however, a straw hat is a classic summer accessory and summer staple! Floppy hats are best for the beach and fedoras and Panama style hats are perfect for adding a chic summer touch to your outfits.

10 piece wardrobe for summer

These pieces are summer-focused and it doesn’t mean you can’t wear anything else. For example, basic tees have a place in all capsule wardrobes in all seasons, you just want to make sure you have these chic summer pieces at the same time!

Also, sunglasses and jewelry are such small pieces, and instead of taking the place of something else on this list, you just won’t find them here. But still don’t forget to wear them with your outfits! Little items like that add the finishing touch.

Don’t forget to get creative with these items too! It may seem limiting if you have a fewer amount of clothes in your wardrobe, but on the contrary, sometimes you’re able to put together even cooler looks.

Your one piece swimsuit can double as a bodysuit.

Your light cardigan can double as a top too. Just knot it over your linen pants or denim shorts. Or wear a bikini top underneath it and leave a few buttons undone.

You could wear your white blouse over your maxi dress (depending on what both of the sleeves look like) and there you go, your dress turned into a skirt. Creativity is key to wardrobe maximization!

How many of these items do you already have in your wardrobe? I’m betting a lot, if not most! Now, if you just need a little bit of help putting these capsule pieces into chic summer outfits, then keep reading!
