If there’s one thing I would love to go back and redo in my 20s, it would have to be my wardrobe. I spent my early 20s in style limbo – torn between what I had always loved to wear (hello, cardigans), and what was trendy at the time. The desire to fit in was stronger than ever, and the result was a very strange mix of outfits that always felt, well, not quite right (and who am I kidding, very cringeworthy in hindsight). What would have helped me immensely during this time of indecision was a capsule wardrobe guide.
A capsule wardrobe gives you the tools to cover all of the classic basics, from which it’s easy to add statement pieces to rock your inner style. If you have a great foundation of looks to mix and match, it makes getting dressed a breeze and prevents you from getting distracted by the ever-shortening trend cycle. If you’re in your late teens or somewhere in your 20s, you can learn from my style regrets by building a capsule wardrobe full of timeless pieces that also fit your current lifestyle. And if you know someone in that stage of life who could benefit from an easy-to-follow shopping list, send them this post!
Your First Capsule Wardrobe Guide
This capsule wardrobe was designed for girls and women in their late teens and early 20s, not only for their current style, but for their future fashion needs as well. Your early 20s wardrobe might need to cover occasions from internships to school to parties to hanging out with friends, and a good capsule wardrobe can address almost all of those needs. The key is to leave fast fashion behind and spend a little bit more on timeless staples. Without further ado, let’s dive in!
Staying On Budget
This is a big list, so it’s important to remember… Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither should your capsule wardrobe! It takes time to accumulate quality pieces that will last, and this isn’t a list that should be checked off with one big haul. Take your time, and prioritize the pieces that your current wardrobe is missing, or pieces that really speak to your current needs or style. This will help you to stay on budget, especially at a time when you might just be starting out on your own.
Tops
1. Button-Up Shirt
everlane
The Boyfriend Shirt in Ultra-Soft Cotton
Although you might have once associated a white button-up shirt with stuffy office workwear, I’m here to tell you – it’s so much more than that! A white shirt is a true chameleon in your closet, and a good one can carry you all the way through your 20s (and into your 30s if you invest in a quality one).
2. Basic Tees
everlane
The Box-Cut Tee in Essential Cotton
Never underestimate the power of a great basic tee to elevate your whole look! Investing in a quality t-shirt is a great place to start because this piece can serve as the base for so many of your favorite looks. Whether you wear it on its own, under a sweater, or paired with a classic blazer, your white t-shirt shouldn’t be see-through and should hold up well after a number of washes (aka, no stretched out neckline). My personal favorite is the Everlane Box-Cut Tee – it has the perfect amount of crop, with a relaxed, slightly boxy style that looks great on everyone.
3. Sweater
everlane
The Boxy Sweater in Everyday Cotton
Layers are key to creating a comprehensive capsule wardrobe. This collection should carry you through all four seasons, and the right layers make it possible. When it comes to sweaters, you’ll want a classic style like a crewneck in a neutral color. Look for natural fibers like cotton, cashmere, or wool to invest in a piece that will hold up well over time. This is a piece you can wear with sweats, lounging around the house, paired with trousers for work, or worn with jeans on the weekend.
4. Tank Tops
abercrombie & fitch
Vintage-Style Rib Tuckable Crew Tank
A simple tank top is another one of those simple layers that will stand the test of time. If you love chic minimalism, pair it with jeans, sandals, and chunky gold jewelry for an off-duty model look. Or, pair it with shorts and an open button-up shirt for an easy, breezy look that would fit right in on your “coastal outfits” Pinterest board.
5. Striped Shirt
abercrombie & fitch
Women’s Long-Sleeve Jersey Tee
A capsule wardrobe doesn’t have to be full of solely solid pieces to be versatile and useful. Incorporating patterns into your first capsule wardrobe will actually make it easier to put outfits together and prevent fashion fatigue. Mix things up by including classic patterns like leopard print, plaid, gingham, and stripes. A striped long-sleeved tee is perfect – it will add a chic Parisian touch to your go-to looks.
6. Off-the-Shoulder Top
banana republic
Everywhere Ponte One-Shoulder Top
An off-the-shoulder top is perfect for a night out. You can pair it with jeans, a mini skirt, or trousers, depending on your personal style. Plus, it still has enough coverage for daytime looks too – your 20s are a great time to find these versatile pieces that can work for multiple occasions.
7. Denim Vest
abercrombie & fitch
Denim Vest
Vest tops might be trending, but they’re also a flattering, classic piece that won’t ever really go out of style. If you want a more casual look, go for a denim style and pair it with white or black jeans, a mini skirt, or another dark-blue wash for an all-denim look. For a more elevated aesthetic, try a white or black version instead in a suiting material.
8. Half-Zip Sweatshirt
abercrombie & fitch
Essential Vintage Sunday Half-Zip
If your high school wardrobe contained a large number of hoodies, you can elevate your go-to casual wear by swapping them out for a half-zip sweater instead. This looks a little more polished than the typical hoodie, even if you pair it with leggings and sneakers. As you age, you might find yourself reaching for this option more and more.
9. Denim Jacket
abercrombie & fitch
Oversized Distressed Denim Trucker Jacket
You can style a denim jacket nearly year-round, but it’s especially great for chilly fall and spring temperatures. This classic piece isn’t going anywhere, so it’s the perfect addition to your capsule outerwear collection. For a timeless take, go for minimal distressing and a medium wash.
10. Cardigan

CashSoft Cardigan
A cardigan is another one of those essential pieces that you’ll never regret adding to your capsule collection. This is one of my favorite pieces because of how many ways you can style it – tied around your shoulders for a preppy look, buttoned all the way and tucked into jeans, or worn over a white tee and left partially undone for a breezy look. Go for a quality version, and look for high percentages of cashmere or wool if you can. Cotton is also a great choice, especially if you aren’t quite ready for the maintenance that cashmere and wool require.
11. Turtleneck
banana republic
Refined Mock-Neck Top
A turtleneck is a great ingredient when it comes to minimalist fashion recipes for fall and winter. Layer it under a black mini dress for a 90s-inspired look, or pair it with a denim skirt for a cute, preppy style. Love Ralph Lauren’s classic Americana aesthetic? Pair a turtleneck with jeans, leather boots, and a suede bag for a go-to casual fall outfit idea.
12. Barn Jacket
abercrombie & fitch
Waxed Barn Jacket
A capsule wardrobe should be full of pieces that are both fun and functional. Enter the barn jacket for fall! This piece of outerwear is great for keeping you warm on cool fall days, but can also be styled for transitional weather with a pair of denim shorts and a t-shirt. You’ll own a high-quality barn jacket for years to come.
13. Cropped Trench Coat

Cropped Trench Coat
When it comes to must-have outerwear for transitional weather, a trench coat consistently tops our list. This French girl’s favorite is the perfect way to elevate even your most casual outfits, whether you’re going for a lowkey vibe with leggings and a t-shirt or something more elegant like a blouse and a pair of jeans. Stick to neutrals when it comes to your trench coat, and you can pair it with nearly any outfit. For a slightly younger style, go for a cropped version if you’re not quite ready for a full-length style.
14. Leather Jacket
levi’s
Moto Welt Pocket Jacket
If you want to add a bit of edge to your capsule wardrobe ideas, you’ll want to make sure a classic leather jacket is on your list. Whether you prefer a blazer, moto style, or something else, a moto jacket is ideal for date night, going out with friends, or adding a bit of personality to your t-shirt and jeans.
15. Wool Coat
abercrombie & fitch
Wool-Blend Tailored Topcoat
A long wool coat is a great staple for winter. Plus, this is a great piece to pair with formal wear, whether you’re headed to a wedding, an internship, or a holiday party. A single-breasted style in a neutral color will pair well with everything and always looks classic.
16. Oversized Blazer
everlane
Oversized Blazer in Buttersmooth
The oversized blazer has certainly been trending lately, but it’s also a great addition for a timeless capsule wardrobe. You can style it in so many ways – with trousers for an office setting or a big presentation for school, with a white t-shirt and jeans for an off-duty model look, or with leggings and a tank top for a chic airport fit.
17. Little Black Dress
abercrombie & fitch
90s Rib Mini Dress
The little black dress is a staple for any woman’s wardrobe! You can adapt it to your needs depending on what stage of life you’re in. For your late teens or 20s, have some fun with a more relaxed tank style in midi form. Or, if you want something that you grow into, go for a more structured style like this.
18. Denim Dress

Denim Scoopneck Mini Dress
A denim mini dress is a fun addition to your first capsule wardrobe. Layer it over a turtleneck or t-shirt for a nostalgic, 90s vibe, wear it by itself for an easy, breezy summer look, or wear it with a cardigan and tall boots for the perfect preppy fall look.
19. Wide-Leg Jeans
madewell
The Perfect Vintage Wide-Leg Jeans
When it comes to denim, try to choose pairs with limited distressing, holes, rips, etc. These tend to look more timeless than distressed versions that go in and out of style. Wide-leg jeans are perfect for wearing with pointed-toe heels or flats, low-profile sneakers, or boots.
20. Black Leggings

Leggings in Stretch Jersey
You don’t have to worry about growing out of black leggings style-wise – you might just switch up how you style them! Instead of wearing them with hoodies and chunky sneakers, try an oversized button-down shirt and loafers for a chic look. Or, go for low-profile sneakers and a half-zip sweatshirt to elevate your athleisure category of dressing.
20. Straight-Leg Jeans
abercrombie & fitch
Mid Rise 90s Straight Jean
Going back to denim, straight-leg jeans are another great pair to have in your capsule collection. These look slightly more tailored than the wide-leg version, so they are great for a more polished appearance. Try styling them with sneakers, loafers, ballet flats, ankle boots, heels, or clogs.
21. Black Jeans
abercrombie & fitch
High Rise 90s Relaxed Jean
Black jeans are a perfect choice for your late teens and 20s. They’re ideal for date night or going out with friends, and are more low-maintenance than white jeans – you don’t have to be as careful about spills or stains.
22. Trousers
everlane
The Draper Pleated Pant in Buttersmooth
When it comes to your first pair of work pants, you can’t go wrong with a pair of high-waisted, pleated trousers. These will flatter every body type, and are easy to style in a wide number of ways for school or the office.
23. Mini Skirt
everlane
The Dream Mini Skirt
A mini skirt in black will be your best friend for styling effortlessly cool and chic outfits. You can dress it down with a white t-shirt and sneakers, or pair it with a button-down and blazer for a more polished look.
24. Denim Shorts

The A-Line Denim Short
If you want to swap out your denim shorts for a more sophisticated style in your 20s, go for an a-line version with a slightly longer length. Just like your jeans, go for a pair with minimal distressing.
Accessories
25. Baseball Cap
abercrombie & fitch
Los Angeles Baseball Cap
A baseball cap is perfect for your casual looks. You can choose one in a pop of color, or stick to a neutral color palette for a more versatile piece. You can choose a solid style if you’d like, or show off your favorite sports team! It’s a great way to add personality to your outfits.
26. Gold Sunglasses

28. Handbag

Your everyday handbag is the perfect place to spend a little more. You use it every day, so it’s worth finding a style to invest in that you love and will want to use for a long time. A small shoulder bag is perfect for holding all of your essentials, but it is also a style that you can bring out with you to dinner or to special events.
29. Tote Bag

Add a gold watch to your capsule wardrobe for an accessory that’s as functional as it is stylish. When it’s not appropriate to have your phone out (like in class or at work), a watch is a great alternative.
32. Hoop Earrings

Italian Leather Stretch Sock Bootie

36. Ballet Flats
