I know some of you hold onto summer until the autumnal equinox (and honestly, I don’t blame you), but when there’s a delicious chill in the morning air and wonderful crisp nights, what’s a girl to do? Besides breaking out outfits with just a *hint* of fall, that is. Early September outfits call for the right mix of cozy and breathable—something to balance the fluctuating temps and still-hot afternoons—while embracing the changing leaves around us. To inspire your own early September outfits, scroll on!
1. cream cardigan + off-white jeans + sneakers
I love mixing whites and off-whites for a color palette that feels fresh, warm, and cozy. Plus, the chunkiness of this cardigan adds great contrast to the sleek jeans; it’s all about texture this time of year!
This outfit would look great with a pair of loafers, but I chose sneakers for a casual twist. Great for an early morning shopping or running errands. Add a suede tote bag to this outfit to add even more of an autumn look.
2. striped sweater + cardigan + jeans + clogs + socks
There’s that cozy cardigan again. I rewear my clothes often and I’m not ashamed! The cardigan is a favorite wardrobe piece because it matches almost everything, even stripes. Though, to be fair, what doesn’t match stripes?
I’m already breaking out my clogs, and though some people don’t wear socks with their clogs (which is fine), I prefer the extra layer – plus, it’s an opportunity to add a pop of style. Whether you go for a design, a frill, or a color, this small but mighty “accessory” can be a great way to add extra style to your outfit.
3. oversized button-up + denim mini skirt + boat shoes
Denim mini skirts have been making a resurgence lately, and since I never did toss mine out, I thought, why not dig it out and style it? To reflect my change of tastes (no chain belts and tube tops for me), I paired mine with an oversized button-up and boat shoes. The result? Classic meets casual meets fall meets trendy. (Whew, that’s a lot of words.)
4. denim vest + barrel jeans + flats
For a while, I was on the fence about barrel jeans – there are some extreme examples, after all. And though I won’t say everyone needs a pair, I do get the appeal! This curve detail is a subtle way to make your outfit feel a little extra.
I added suede flats to incorporate a subtle feeling of fall. Paired with a sleeveless denim vest, this outfit balances summer and fall nicely.

5. black top + black shorts + linen blazer + loafers + bucket bag + scarf
One of the best things about this time of year is the layering. And no, it doesn’t have to mean heat exhaustion! A linen blazer is breathable and pairs well over a sleeveless shirt or basic tee. Plus, the shorts are great for warmer days too. I’m really liking this longer trouser style lately – the longer length adds comfort and coverage without feeling too hot.
To weave in style and layers, add a watch, a scarf, a belt, and a stylish tote bag.
6. black cardigan + white skirt + ballet flats
Classic feminine looks always have a place… even in September! I’ve been getting so much use out of my white skirts – a capsule wardrobe item that has definitely proven its worth.
To transition them from the fun, summery looks to this new season, I’ve been pairing them with darker colors and longer sleeves – like this fitted black cardigan. Undo a few buttons for more of an “open” look for a warmer day!
7. white t-shirt + jeans + blazer + suede mules
Favorite outfit combo in action here! When I die, you’ll find me buried in a blazer, t-shirt, and jeans (love the pair I’m wearing here). This is a no-fail outfit formula inspired by our favorite French women. It’s so versatile, too. For this in-between season, I paired this outfit combo with suede mules. When it gets cooler out, I’ll choose ankle boots. But whatever you choose – ankle boots, ballet flats, sneakers, sandals – you really can’t go wrong. It all works!
Early September Outfit Ideas
How can one wear so many outfits when September just started? What can I say, I don’t mess around. (When it comes to fashion, that is.) Though in-between seasons have their challenges (not quite summer, not quite fall), they present an opportunity to get creative and create things you may never have thought of before!
