I know our current “hot streak” (40s, mind you) is just a false spring, but that doesn’t stop me from getting excited and daydreaming about new looks! While I’m a believer in wearing wardrobe staples year-round, winter tends to bring more muted colors and heavier textures. To me, what sets spring fashion apart are nautical striped shirts, white jeans, straw bags… and sometimes all three together! It’s fresh, it’s fun, and it’s a lighter look that’s enjoyable to think about. If you, like me, are starting to plan your spring outfits (and where you’ll wear them), you’ll love these easy spring looks. Using mostly wardrobe staples, you can throw them on and still look cute – whether spring for you means farmers’ markets, iced coffee runs, or reading by the water!

1. striped sweater + white jeans + ballet flats + straw bag + coin necklace

It doesn’t get much more spring than stripes and white jeans. These two are made for each other, and the result is always fresh. The combination of a knit sweater with denim already creates a great texture mix, but to take it up a notch, add a straw bag. Not only is it visually interesting, but it’s practical too! You can store your latest book for reading on a park bench or carry fresh flowers from the farmers’ market. Black ballet flats are a perfect choice for weather that still has a chill, and a compass coin necklace is a cute finishing touch to channel the spring season with nautical vibes.

2. rugby sweater + white shorts + boat shoes + boat tote + baseball cap

I love incorporating preppy, nautical vibes into spring fashion, and you’ll see plenty of it in this post. If your spring is warm enough for a pair of lightweight white shorts, you’ll have no shortage of outfit ideas! Paired with a rugby sweater on top, it creates that no-fail stripe-and-white combo again, while adding a bit of extra warmth. This would be a cute look for exploring a small coastal town, running weekend errands, or watching your kids play.

3. polo shirt + tee + white jeans + clogs + boat tote + baseball cap

If you have a pair of clogs and are wondering how to style them for spring, here you go! White denim with a flared bottom (you could even swap in blue denim and it’ll still look cute) pairs perfectly with clogs – and even some socks if the morning is chilly.

On top, layers of a white tee and sweater add a comfy touch, perfect for weekend park walks or farmers’ markets. A baseball cap leans into the casual side, and to complete the look, add a boat tote. It’s the go-to casual spring bag – and you can even get it personalized for an extra special touch. I’m currently waiting for mine to arrive!

4. striped shirt + linen shorts + straw bag + ballet flats

We know stripes and white bottoms are a match made in heaven, but what about linen bottoms? Equally good! A little Parisian-inspired, this outfit is perfect for those in warmer climates, because when spring arrives, you’re already reaching for the shorts.

Add a large straw bag – it’s made for fresh flowers from the market or a blanket and a book for reading (can you tell these are my two favorite warm-weather activities?!). Black ballet flats and black sunglasses complete the look with a chic, coordinated finish.

5. trench coat + sweater + jeans + ankle boots

Now, for those who don’t have warm springs, here’s a look for you. Sometimes spring weather just means ditching the winter coat. In this case, swapping a wool coat for a trench coat is the perfect choice. Trench coats are ideal for both spring and fall, and in the Midwest, we don’t get many opportunities to wear them! (Spring is a day, and fall doesn’t last long.)

When doing the seasonal wardrobe clean out, keep in mind that lighter-wash jeans are a great swap to brighten up your outfit, refresh your spring wardrobe, and channel the freshness of the new, warmer season.

6. cardigan + shorts + boat shoes + boat tote

Using a mix of wardrobe staples you already know, you can create a casual outfit perfect for lovers of preppy fashion. This look is just begging to be worn on the boardwalk! Whether you’re actually boating or not, pairing a high-quality cardigan with lightweight shorts makes a great base for your weekend adventures.

7. striped shirt + linen pants + sandals + straw bag

shirt | pants | sandals | sunglasses | straw bag

This is a combination I’ve worn myself time and time again. Once again, a capsule wardrobe is ideal. What can’t you style with a striped shirt and linen pants?

If you don’t have a straw bag yet, I highly recommend getting one. It’s perfect for turning any look into a spring or summer outfit. Even if you’re wearing ankle boots instead of sandals, it works beautifully – but for warmer climates, sandals are a great choice to pair with pants, keeping the outfit easy, breezy… (did you just finish the rest in your head? IYKYK)

8. cable knit sweater + white shorts + clogs + baseball cap + boat tote

There’s something about this look that screams “reading on the beach with a blanket.” It gives off New England coastal vibes – perfect for lovers of preppy and spring fashion. Plus, it doesn’t get much more casual than this! It’s easy to throw on a sweater and shorts, slip into some clogs, and go. Perfect for those days when you don’t want to put a lot of effort into your look… and guess what? You don’t have to!

9. trench coat + cardigan + white tee + jeans + ballet flats + straw bag

This layered spring outfit, though polished, is still easy. It’s mostly wardrobe staples, after all! Channeling French spring style, this chic yet simple look is perfect for a walk through the park. Thanks to the smart layering, it looks effortlessly put-together. Complete the outfit with a trench coat to ward off any lingering winter chill and a straw bag for that warm-weather touch to balance your year-round staples.
