These 9 fall outfit ideas are perfect for a laidback, yet polished vibe for autumn weather. Whether you’re running your regular weekend errands or meeting friends for a quick cup of coffee, these are 9 fall outfits casual dress wearers will fall in love with this season.
1. button-up shirt + navy sweater + jeans + boat shoes + canvas tote

The perfect starting point for a cozy and casual fall outfit? A warm knit sweater. And you can’t get much more iconic than the classic Polo Bear sweater by Ralph Lauren. This famous teddy has taken a lot of forms over the years, which is what makes these sweaters so fun! He’s always wearing a different outfit, which gives you a different vibe depending on which style you choose.
Get inspired by Polo Bear’s own outfit by styling your fall sweater with a pair of jeans, a button-up shirt, and boat shoes (or loafers). The chocolate brown shade is perfect for this year – it’s classic for autumn, but also trending. Add a coordinating Longchamp Le Pliage tote bag in mocha, and you’re ready for a full fall day.
2. car coat + leggings + knee-high boots + leather bag
If you’ve ever been inspired by the posh look of English countryside fashion, this next look is for you! First, start with a classic silhouette for your jacket. This car coat is simple in design, but features beautiful draping and has the perfect vintage touch for your outfit.
Next, keep things casual and practical with your pants – and don’t be afraid to reach for a fall favorite, black leggings. Style these in a more elevated way by pairing them with your timeless jacket and tall riding boots. They give your look a fun equestrian aesthetic, perfect for the British countryside. Finish your look with a sleek leather crossbody in chocolate brown.
3. rugby shirt + denim mini skirt + sneakers + socks + suede bag

A rugby shirt is another piece that’s trending for the fall season, and is ideal for lovers of preppy, classic looks. If you were a fan of the last look inspired by our chic friends across the pond, you might favor this style too – the rugby shirt was popularized in England. It was originally designed as part of the rugby uniform, which makes it the perfect choice for a casual fall look that’s also a little bit sporty.
Balance out the sporty street style of your top with a more feminine piece on the bottom – like a denim mini skirt. And if mini skirts aren’t your thing, you can always swap this out with a pair of straight-leg jeans instead, or even black leggings.
Use the sandwich method to choose your shoes – a pair of Adidas sneakers is the perfect complement to your top. Finish your look with a pair of ribbed socks and a suede shoulder bag.
4. wool jacket + turtleneck + gingham pants + sunglasses + ankle boots + suede bag

Casual fall outfit ideas are so much fun to style because of the layering possibilities! In the cooler months, it’s easier to create interesting looks with mixed patterns, textures, and fabrics.
For a fun day spent window shopping, here’s how to create a look that’s both casual and chic. First, start with a pair of patterned pants – these will serve as your “hero” piece, so have fun with them! Gingham has been a favorite of mine already this summer and going into fall.
On top, stick to solid-colored staples. A cream turtleneck and a gray wool jacket are perfect. Then, introduce even more textures to your look with your accessories. Try a suede slouchy bag in olive from Madewell, and leather ankle boots. Then, a chic pair of oval sunglasses is the cherry on top of your look!
5. cropped trench + turtleneck + jeans + tote bag + sunglasses + sneakers

Want to head outside to admire the changing fall colors? You’ll want a comfortable pair of shoes for walking, and this pair of leopard print sneakers from J.Crew is both stylish and practical. Because these shoes are the highlight of your outfit, keep the rest of your look relatively simple.
On top, try a cozy turtleneck paired with a cropped trench coat. If you want to add a bit of edge to your look, you can exchange the trench coat for a bomber jacket or a leather jacket instead. Next, choose a timeless pair of denim – straight-leg, slim, or wide-leg would be best for this look. Add a pair of chic sunglasses, and finish your look with a slouchy tote bag – it can hold everything from a camera to your latest read.
6. corduroy jacket + turtleneck + dark-wash jeans + ankle boots + shoulder bag

Corduroy might be a fall staple, but it’s also having a moment again this year in the form of jackets. For a polished yet casual look that would fit right in on the streets of NYC, pair your jacket with a black turtleneck and dark-wash jeans. Next, accessorize with black leather ankle booties and a sleek leather shoulder bag. Finish your ensemble with tortoiseshell sunglasses and gold earrings. Now you’re ready for a coffee shop meet-up with friends, dressed in chic and on-trend style.

7. burgundy sweater + button-up shirt + leggings + gold jewelry + mule slides + tote

Fall color combinations are another fun way to start your outfit. Burgundy gives that “old money” feel, while light blue provides great contrast to the rich autumn shade. To balance out your two elevated tops, go for a more casual bottom, like black leggings. This might be the ideal work-from-home look, and a step up from your go-to sweatshirt.
Accessorize with comfortable mule slides – an elegant alternative to slippers. Finish your outfit with a patterned tote bag, a gold bracelet watch, and gold earrings.
8. sweater + wool coat + baseball cap + jeans + sneakers + leather bag

This next casual chic look is perfect for school drop-off or running to grab a coffee early on a brisk fall Saturday morning. First, start with a pair of classic jeans. On top, reach for a cozy sweater. Then, layer on a wool coat for extra warmth – this will keep out any wind or especially chilly autumn air!
Stick to practical footwear if you’re going to be out and about – New Balance sneakers are both comfortable and cute. Finish your look with a coordinating baseball cap and a sleek leather bag.
9. denim dress + neck scarf + red socks + loafers + hoops + tote bag

Fall might be one of my favorite times to visit Paris. Just imagine strolling along the Seine, admiring the fall colors with a coffee and a pastry in hand!
For a look that gives off the perfect amount of the Parisian chic aesthetic, style a denim dress with red accessories for a pop of color. Colorful socks were everywhere on our last visit to the city, especially when paired with loafers, sneakers, or Mary Jane flats.
Add a red coordinating neck scarf to accessorize as well – this is a Parisian favorite. Then, finish your look with a Le Pliage canvas tote bag from French designer Longchamp.
Cool and Casual Fall Style Ahead
From visits to the apple orchard to pumpkin patches and festivals, fall is the perfect time to have a wide variety of casual outfit inspiration at your disposal! Make sure to save these looks for cooler weather, and you’ll never run out of cool, chic looks for the chilly season.

Nice roundup — clear and wearable ideas. Quick question: for the rugby shirt + denim mini skirt look, would you recommend thicker socks or thin ankle socks with sneakers for chilly days? Also, any tips for substituting the Polo Bear sweater on a budget?
Hi Benedicta! I would typically recommend thinner ankle socks in most cases, unless it’s really cold. Thin ankle socks don’t add extra visual “weight” around your ankles, and also ensure your sneakers will still fit correctly. But it’s all about how you feel most comfortable! As for the Polo Bear sweater, Anthropologie and Ralph Lauren both have sweaters around $150 that have different types of dogs embroidered on them in a similar style. If you like the bear in particular, it looks like Altar’d State currently has one! I would also check online resellers and your local vintage/thrift stores, as sometimes you can luck out and find a pre-loved one there for a good price. 🙂
