Different types of blazers for women

Though men are usually just going to wear a suit jacket or sport coat, we women have a lot more options! There are so many different styles of blazers for women, but don’t let that overwhelm you. Here are some of the top ones you could consider adding to your wardrobe:

  • Linen blazer

A linen blazer is a great option for the warmer months, like spring and summer. It’s lightweight and can add a little extra layer for the breezy summer nights as well as add a little bit of style. You can wear this with light wash denim or white jeans.

  • Formal blazer

A formal blazer falls under the category of a suit jacket. A suit jacket (a term typically used for menswear) is generally lined, padded, and worn in a suit set. For women, however, a formal blazer is typically fitted and sleek, such as a tuxedo blazer. A formal blazer can be worn to formal events, yes, but it can look ever so chic worn with just plain slim jeans and ballet flats! A velvet, silk, or double-breasted blazer with gold buttons can be formal too.

  • Sweater blazer

Want a casual blazer? Look for a sweater blazer. This is basically a comfortable sweater material with the silhouette of a blazer. This is one of my favorite style hacks for looking polished while still being comfortable! A sweater blazer is perfect for working from home or wearing to more casual events.

  • Oversized blazer

An oversized blazer (sometimes called a boyfriend blazer) works perfectly for casual occasions as well. An oversized blazer can be worn with jeans, of course, but even leggings too. Both an oversized blazer or sweater blazer is great for a casual outfit!

  • Classic blazer

A classic blazer is not too long and oversized, but not too short and structured either. It’s not too fancy with embellishments and buttons. It is just right. A classic blazer can moonlight for both casual and semi-formal occasions. Camel, black, grey, and navy blue are all versatile and if you want a classic blazer, start there. Brown blazers, especially in camel tones, are the classic equivalent of wearing a camel coat. You’ll always look chic and timeless in a piece like this!

The blazer styles don’t end. Leather blazer, tweed blazer, party blazer, or even a floral blazer-the options are endless for women! But these are the 5 blazer styles to start with that I think are worth adding to your wardrobe. Not only are they perfect for wearing with jeans, but they’ll add lots of variety to your wardrobe as well.

Once you have the basics, consider getting a fun print and color, such as leopard print or bold red to add freshness to your wardrobe.

For the fall and winter months, I love reaching for a tweed, plaid, or houndstooth blazer and in the summer, I like stripes, linen, and lighter shades. Ultimately, the right blazer (or blazers) is the one that you’ll find yourself wearing over and over again. You may find that 3-5 blazers provide you with the most wardrobe mixing and matching potential!

What jeans to wear with blazers

The right jeans matter! But thankfully, there are many “right” jeans for you to choose from.

To help you nail down what blazers to wear with jeans, think about the look you are going for. Are you going to work? Brunch? Shopping? Coffee date? Meeting?

Dark blue jeans can come across as more polished. Very dark jeans, like black jeans, can look dressier.

White jeans are best for the warmer months such as spring and summer, but you can definitely wear them in fall & winter too. Related: How To Wear White Jeans in the Fall in Classic and Stylish Ways

Skinny jeans are great for when you want to wear knee-high boots with your blazer. I like cropped flared jeans and straight-leg jeans for when I want to wear a boots and blazer combo together.

Though I prefer to keep my jeans generally classic, jeans with a slight fray or a few subtle rips are okay, as they can dress down your blazer, making it work for the streets.

If your workplace allows you to wear blazers with jeans, then you are better off keeping your outfit on the more professional side. Opt for a more tailored fit, or a blazer with polished elements, such as gold buttons. A grey blazer looks professional too.

If you are headed to business meetings and jeans are allowed, then you’re probably best wearing black jeans with a dress shirt and a grey or navy blazer for a look that’s polished yet professional.

For any casual chic look, this is my favorite outfit combination:

basic tee + blazer + jeans + shoes + accessories

It sounds basic, yes, but that’s the beauty of it! It gives you a starting place but allows flexibility for your mood and occasion. If you want an easy go-to outfit formula, narrow down this combination to 2-3 of your favorite pieces.

As an example, what 2-3 pairs of jeans do you love and know you can switch out?

Mine: straight leg, cropped flared, vintage style

What 2-3 basic tees do you love and know you can switch out?

Mine: white t-shirt, black t-shirt, gray t-shirt

What 2-3 blazers do you love and know match your tees and jeans and can be switched out?

Mine: camel sweater blazer, tweed blazer, black oversized blazer

What 2-3 shoes do you know work great with your favorite pairs of jeans?

Mine: black ankle boots, white sneakers, brown loafers

So though the basic outfit combination stays the same, I can create new looks by easily switching out some of the pieces for my 2-3 favorites!

Here are some of my other favorite blazer and jeans outfits for inspiration!

If you’re wondering what shirt to pair with a blazer, well for starters, you can never go wrong with a white t-shirt. Or really, a white shirt in general, especially a button-down.

A black blazer combination with dark denim and a white top is such a classic look, and the easiest way to wear this look! When it comes to footwear, anything goes. You can wear anything from white sneakers to ballet flats to ankle boots.
