Lately, I can’t stop dreaming about the English countryside! Envision blooming gardens full of primrose, lavender and daffodils, long walks in the fresh country air, and quaint cottages dotting the rolling hills. I can’t imagine many places that are more peaceful than the countryside of England, the perfect place for enjoying a cup of tea in one of the many gardens at a wrought iron bistro set. Along with the gorgeous scenery, I’ve also been daydreaming about English countryside fashion. With a recently booked trip to the Cotswolds on the horizon, I’ll be turning to classic country couture to inspire my summer and fall outfits this year. The Outfit Inspiration

1. fisherman sweater + white skirt + bandana + earrings + basket + rain boots

When you take a look at classic English countryside fashion, cable knits will pop up again and again! This classic country wear is not only stylish and classic, but also provides practical warmth in the chilly (and often rainy) English weather. This is what British country style is all about – meeting in the middle ground of practical and beautiful.

If you want to style a cable knit sweater for transitional spring or summer weather, pair it with a frilly skirt to add a fun, feminine touch. This style of skirt can help to soften the rest of your look! Add a pair of tall rain boots (or wellies), a basket bag, and a pair of pearl earrings to complete the look. And if you want to tie back your hair, consider a floral bandana or scarf for the finishing touch!

2. cable knit sweater + white tee + jeans + boots + saddle bag + hoop earrings

Speaking of cable knit sweaters, you can also try pairing your cable knit with a pair of jeans when the weather calls for something warmer. Try styling a chocolate brown cable knit with a pair of white jeans. This pairing is a classic color combination that provides an interesting contrast to your outfit! Underneath your sweater, try layering a white t-shirt. The pop of white fabric from beneath your sweater collar is always an eye-catching touch as well.

Next, go for another pair of practical boots if you want to get authentic English countryside style. After all, unexpected rainstorms are known to pop up all over Britain! This pair of leather boots is not only beautiful but also water-resistant.

When it comes to your accessories, keep things simple. Go for a pair of small gold hoops and a saddle bag for an equestrian-inspired edge.

3. barn jacket + white tee + linen shorts + baseball cap + rain boots

Wax jackets or barn jackets are some of the most well-known essentials in a staple English countryside wardrobe. Even the royals have their own collection of heritage-style jackets, and you’ll often spot Princess Catherine of Wales (formerly better-known as Kate Middleton) wearing one of these Barbour Jackets around the UK. After all, if you expect to do any general outdoor activity in England, you’ll want to be prepared for wind or rain to pop up out of nowhere!

If you want to get the English country look, don’t be afraid to pair unexpected pieces together. Layers are key if the English plan on doing any sort of outdoor activities! Even in the summertime, they often bring a jacket along. Underneath, stick to lighter layers like a white t-shirt and linen shorts. Add your rain gear and a baseball cap, and you’re ready for a random spring shower, while still looking chic and classic! That’s the beauty of English country style.

4. floral dress + sweater + basket + earrings + tall boots

Even though British country clothing might incorporate traditionally masculine pieces, there are also plenty of ways to lean into a feminine look within the aesthetic. Classic florals are the perfect way to do this! Embrace summer style in the blooming English countryside with a floral midi or maxi dress. Then, bring a cotton cardigan along with you just in case it gets chilly. Finish the look with tall leather riding boots, a straw basket bag, and a pair of gold hoop earrings.

5. barn jacket + white maxi dress + basket bag + tall boots + scarf

If you daydream about walking through a classic English garden in style, this look is for you! First, start with a long, breezy white dress. This romantic style of dress is perfect for the vibrant English countryside in the spring or summer. Next, add juxtaposition to your look with a barn jacket. This will introduce two contrasting textures to your outfit, while also giving you an added layer in case it gets cold later on.

Then, add a pair of tall leather boots with a low heel. These will be comfortable to walk in, but also ideal if you walk through any tall grass or mud. Finish your look with a straw tote for the final touch on your countryside vibe.

6. cable knit sweater + mac coat + skinny jeans + rain boots + bandana

If you need inspiration about how to style your skinny jeans in 2025, here’s an outfit idea for you! First, start with a pair of skinny jeans in a classic wash (stay away from holes or rips if you’re going for a classic look). Next, add a pair of wellies or tall rain boots. The skinny jeans will work great with this shoe and fit underneath perfectly!

On top, go back to basics with a cream cable knit sweater. If it’s chilly, throw on a Mac or trench coat for an added layer. Finally, add a pop of color with a red bandana or neck scarf to finish the look.

7. cable knit sweater + sunglasses + denim shorts + basket bag + rain boots

Do you prefer a more casual, laid-back style? Here’s how to stay true to your own personal style and best go-to outfits, but also lean into the aesthetic of English countryside fashion. First, start with your trusty pair of denim shorts. I own this baggy pair of shorts from Old Navy, and they’re the perfect length!

Next, add a cable knit sweater on top. Neutral and earthy tones are especially popular in British countryside style, so a dark hunter green is a natural choice. Next, incorporate your pair of wellies and a straw basket bag. Finish your classic summer outfit with a pair of black sunglasses.

8. white tank top + white midi skirt + pearls + basket bag + strappy sandals

Of course, you don’t have to stick to a dark color palette if you want to try out fashion inspired by the English countryside. In the summertime, lean into a light look with linen pieces and white blouses. Pair a white tank with a white midi skirt for a simple, yet chic monochromatic look.

Next, add texture to your look with your accessories. Try a pair of leather strappy sandals and a basket bag embroidered with flowers to bring the English gardens to you. Finish your look with a pair of pearl stud earrings.

9. plaid blazer + turtleneck + skinny jeans + riding boots + saddle bag

turtleneck | blazer | boots | bag | earrings | jeans

When it comes to classic English patterns, plaid is a popular choice. Mix an academic-inspired vibe with an equestrian one for the ultimate English countryside look. First, start with a plaid blazer layered over a thin black turtleneck. Next, add a pair of skinny jeans, tucked into a pair of tall leather riding boots. Finally, accessorize with a leather saddle bag and a pair of pearl stud earrings to complete the look.
