From London to Milan, spring 2025 fashion trends came alive in a big way in the most recent fashion weeks. Designers showed everything from delicate lace and frills to edgy moto jackets and high-low styles. Runways showcased pieces for the upcoming season, and there was a lot of fun to be had in surrealist looks, and looks that called to mind past decades of fashion with vintage flair. Of course, fashion is meant to be fun! But just because you’re about to read a list of 10 predicted spring trends doesn’t mean you need to toss out everything from last year. The best style is a balance between classic pieces that feel like you, mixed with contemporary pieces that speak to you and excite you in the moment. With that little tidbit of advice in mind, maybe you’ll find that spark to excite some new experimentation in your wardrobe this spring!
1. Dresses Over Pants: Practical and Trendy
I have a good feeling that my fellow fashion lovers in cold climates will love this next trend spotted on the spring 2025 runways. Here in the Midwest, the temperature can be a little slow to get the memo that spring has arrived. Cold temps can last well into April, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t all get the itch to embrace spring fashion as soon as possible. This first runway trend is a great solution: wearing dresses over pants.
Although you might give this look a side eye, hear me out. Not only does this look provide additional warmth, it’s also a fun way to play with proportions (and get twice the wear out of your favorite pieces). Dresses styled over jeans might be the first thing that comes to mind when you flash back to what was popular in the early 2000s, but you don’t have to limit yourself to that look. Plus, it’s the perfect way to add coverage if you’re worried about the length of a mini dress that you’re just dying to wear.
Try styling a monochromatic look with flowy satin or trouser-style pants and an elegant tank dress. The looks above styled by Khaite, Fendi and Moschino offer great inspiration. A pair of sandals in a coordinating color tie it all together.
2. Tutus: Not Just for the Ballet
Channel your inner ballerina with this next spring runway trend. I love how much fun designers seemed to have with the selections for the upcoming season. And there’s no reason that you have to wait for spring to start styling a tulle skirt or dress. They’re perfect for the holiday season and New Year’s looks.
Or, take a page out of Carrie Bradshaw’s book and wear it any day you want to make a statement (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, she has an iconic tutu skirt dress that she wears in the opening credits of Sex and the City). The 90s are back in a big way, and this look just goes to show it. But in fact, the tutu skirt goes back way further than that – the romantic tulle skirt made its first appearance at the Paris Opera in 1832 when it was worn by a ballerina.
If you aren’t ready to take the leap (or as they say in the ballet world, a jetĂ©), you can tone down this look by choosing a longer version with less poof, like a tulle midi skirt, Or, lean into a midi version with a fun dress from Anthropologie. Try pairing it with ballet flats or Mary Janes for the full effect.
3. Quiet Elegance: Timeless Style
The Peter Pan collar has been a mainstay in women’s fashion since the 1920s/1930s. Although its “trendiness” comes and goes, its reappearance in the spring 2025 shows indicates a renewed appreciation by designers for the elegant look. The rounded collar lends a softer appearance to more structured pieces. And the Peter Pan collar wasn’t alone in the category of quietly elegant pieces on the runway this year – it was joined by other wardrobe staples with delicately feminine details like bow-tie blouses and pleated skirts.
When you think about how to translate a runway style into your personal day-to-day wear, this would be a great place to start. Chances are, you may already have one or more of these pieces in your wardrobe. And if not, they’re certainly pieces that have staying power through the years.
4. Polka Dots: Spring’s Playful Pattern
The reappearance of polka dots on the spring runways is another great indicator of the playful vibes that await us in this upcoming season’s fashion. Once again, this is another very wearable trend that you might already have in your wardrobe.
The great thing about polka dots is their versatility. Whether you style them in a classic black and white polka dot dress for a summer wedding or maybe in a more dramatic fashion for date night, they’re a fun pattern that you can wear for nearly any occasion.
If you aren’t quite sure how they’ll fit into your current personal style, you could certainly try a dress or sweater, but you might want to start small with an accessory like a scarf or headband. It’s the perfect chic finishing touch for any spring look.
5. Ornate: Brocade, Brooches and Bows
Minimalism and quiet luxury have been all the rage the past year or so, and so we’re due for something a little different. Ornate styles from the spring runway shows are here to mix things up by adding a bit of sparkle and pizazz to next season’s looks.
If maximalist style is more up your alley, you’re going to love the glamorous brocade tops and jackets, sequins, and decorated details adorning pieces from dresses to skirts to shorts and everything in between. Designers proved that sequins and shimmer aren’t just reserved for holiday parties. You don’t have to leave them behind when the weather gets warmer!
Add a bit of sparkle to your look with a crystal-adorned handbag, an embellished slip dress, or a brocade shell tank.
6. Nautical: Springy Stripes
Nautical-inspired sailor stripes are the perfect way to usher in warmer weather. Even if a beach day seems like a million years away, a classic striped shirt or dress is the perfect way to manifest higher temps. Plus, this trend calls to mind classic Parisian street style – some of our greatest inspirations here at MCO. The Mariner or Breton tee is a favorite for inclusion in a capsule wardrobe.
7. Lace: Lovely Little Details
A little bit of lace trim goes a long way when it comes to elevating any piece of clothing. The intricacy and delicate nature of lace means that it makes any article of fashion look more intentional and painstakingly crafted. Whether it’s an all-lace piece like the dress shown above or a little lining on the hem of a skirt or tank top, lace can soften an otherwise edgy item.
Lace also adds a vintage charm to your favorite looks. Whether you’re dressing for high tea or looking for a contrasting piece to your favorite moto jacket, you can fit lace-detailed pieces into your own personal style.
8. High Low: Leggy Looks
Right away this runway trend brought me back to my high school days when high-low skirts and dresses were all the rage. And I have to admit, they were a fun way to add interest to any look, casual or formal!
Breeze spring dresses in flowy fabrics are definitely a vibe for warmer months. And if you’re looking to bring a bit of drama into your look, the voluminous skirts with long trains shown above are a gorgeous way to do it.
Plus, high-low pieces really let your footwear shine. Or, choose a high-low top to show off a new favorite belt.
9. Frills: A Bit of Fabric Fun
This spring is the perfect time to embrace your fun, feminine side with frills! You can go all out with a frill-filled dress or start small with a fun frill detail. Frills add movement and interest to your spring looks. Even when it’s too warm to layer, frills add dimension to your favorite styles.
A spring wedding or shower is the perfect time to try out a frilled piece. Or, start small with a frilled top or bag for a coffee date. It can be fun to get out of your comfort zone when it comes to fashion, and trying a runway trend is the perfect way to do that.
10. Florals – Blooms and Buds
Florals for spring? Groundbreaking? (Name that movie!) Even though florals for spring may not exactly be a big surprise, each season offers a slightly different take on the blooms. The good news is, this is yet another trend that you could try out with pieces you already have in your closet.
Designers this year brought us a wide variety of prints, everything from florals in light shades to mix and matched pieces in varying bouquets of color and pattern. The way that you can update your floral pieces for 2025 is by choosing silhouettes and cuts that have a contemporary look. For example, style your go-to springtime dress with slingback flats and a pair of oval sunglasses for a chic spring outfit.
You can also try incorporating other runway trends into your floral looks – frills and fringe are the perfect companions to this soft style.
The Rundown on Runway Trends
The runway styles shown during fashion weeks are generally the real deal when it comes to predicting fashion trends for the upcoming season. Retailers act as a trickle-down approach from designers, incorporating runway styles into ones that are then widely produced and sold in stores across the world.
You don’t have to save up for expensive designer pieces to recreate runway styles! Get creative with pieces you already have in your own wardrobe, or keep an eye out at your favorite stores for spring releases. You’ll start to see similar designs inspired by the ones above, and you’ll have the foresight to “pass” or “purchase” based on your own personal style and what excites you. This article gives you a preview of what’s to come, and hopefully, you’re a little more excited about one or more trends for spring fashion on the horizon!
