Summer Outfits for Women Over 50 You Will Want to Save

I have a love/hate relationship with summer looks. On one hand, they’re a great opportunity to play with fun colors, breezy sundresses, and classic linen. But on the other hand, it can be tough to find styles that flatter you while still providing comfort from the heat of summer days. For instance, it can be difficult to avoid shorts that are just too short and find shirts that aren’t crop tops – especially for older women. Summer outfits for women over 50 can prove a little more challenging when it comes to shopping these days, so with these challenges in mind, I’ve put together the looks below to hopefully help you feel cool (literally) and confident this summer.

1. open-knit sweater + white jeans + tank top + sandals

White jeans are one of those classic staples that will never go out of style for the summer months. Whether you wait until Memorial Day has passed or not to break out your white pants (I never do!), white jeans are the perfect staple piece for casual looks.

If you’re looking to add a new variation of white pants to your wardrobe, swap out your skinny jeans for a pair of high-waisted, wide-legged pants like this style from Madewell. The higher waist will help your legs to appear longer, and also pair well with pieces that might hit a bit higher on your torso. This sweater, for instance, is hip length and will pair well with a higher waist pant below.

To continue the long line of your body underneath the sweater, try a tank top that matches the white pants. This will help to continue drawing the eye upward for a slimmer look. Plus, it will help provide coverage underneath a piece that may be more sheer, or open-knit.

Finish the look with sleek leather accessories like this bucket bag and sandals. Silver hoops complete the outfit!

2. white button-down + straight jeans + mules

Bright colors are perfect for summer, but if your personal style leans more toward neutral colors, try the outfit formula above. First, grab your favorite button-down shirt. Even though they have long sleeves, they’re generally looser-fitting and airier in materials like linen that will help you stay cool in warmer months. I like the style above because of the rounded hem, which adds a bit more shape and movement to the piece rather than a straight hem.

Next, try a pair of straight-leg jeans in a medium wash. They’re the happy medium between wide-leg and skinny jeans, and are one of the most universally flattering styles of jeans. This pair will become one of your go-tos for summer fashions.

If you like to add a bit of height to your look with your shoes, this pair of mule heels is perfect for summer. The block heel is great for added stability and comfort, so that you won’t need to worry about bringing an extra pair of flats in your bag to change into. And if you’re at the point in your life where you prefer to reach for something other than heels, you can easily switch these out for a pair of flat mules instead (keep reading for a version of those you may like).

Finish the casual look with a straw tote, chunky gold hoops, and a chic pair of sunglasses.

3. tank top + knit sweater + dress shorts + fisherman sandals

Finding the perfect pair of shorts for summer is easier said than done. Denim shorts can be tight or stiff, and it can be difficult to find a pair that fits just right. To beat the summer heat while still looking chic doing it, try a pair of dress shorts.

This particular pair above is high-waisted, with flattering pleats. They will be looser around your thighs, and comfortable to move around in. Plus, they are easy to style up or down depending on the occasion. For another neutral look, try adding a black tank top on top. Then, tie a light sweater over your shoulders or across your chest to help add a classic detail.

Fisherman sandals are the perfect shoe that offer enough support for walking, while also still being breathable. A circular straw bag for your necessities, and a pair of tortoiseshell sunglasses round out this classic summer outfit.

4. midi dress + gold earrings + gold sandals

This next look is for the lover of different colors! Breezy summer dresses are not only great for celebrating warmer weather, but they also double as perfect vacation staples. I can picture this dress starring in an oceanside dinner, or maybe lunch and drinks enjoyed outside.

One of the features I love about this style is the shape created by the ruched waistband. It makes for a flattering figure, while the thicker straps add additional support for your chest. There’s also a small slit in the skirt, but is not too high that you have to worry about a large gust of wind! This style also appears to have breathable fabric, but the saturated color helps the dress from becoming too sheer.

Add fun accessories like a metallic gold pair of flip-flops, a fringe straw bag, and gold earrings to complete the look.

5. striped jacket + tank top + pull-on chino shorts

Speaking of shorts, this next pair is perfect for those who are looking for a more flexible waistband than a traditional button and zipper pair. These pull-on shorts also have a slightly longer length, which can often be more comfortable for mature women.

If you love a classic denim jacket but want to mix things up, this striped version from J.Crew is the perfect way to do that. The vertical stripes offer a slimming effect and you could either choose to button it partially, completely, or leave it open over a high-neck white tank top.

Gold rings, a crossbody bag with leather accents, and a chic pair of leather sandals complete this look that’s perfect for everyday wear.

6. wrap dress + gold hoops + leather sandals

A good wrap dress is one of my favorite recommendations for a chic summer wardrobe. They’re versatile enough for everyday wear but are also easy to dress up for date night. Plus, no matter your body type, they can be flattering, as the wrap style allows you to make adjustments for the right fit.

Although the style pictured above happens to be a sleeveless dress, there are so many varieties out there with all kinds of sleeve lengths. Whether you like puff sleeves, flutter sleeves, or even long sleeves, there is a perfect wrap dress out there for you.

Accessorize with staple pieces for cute and casual summer looks over 50: the straw tote bag, leather slide sandals, and gold hoop earrings.

7. white jean jacket + striped midi slip dress + strappy heels

Shop the Look

If you’re looking for the ease of styling a dress for summer but are searching for an option that is still on the modest side and provides adequate coverage, midi dresses are a great go-to.

This highly-rated midi dress from J.Crew is the perfect dress for summer outfits for women over 50. It features a flattering silhouette with a midi length and comes in a variety of both bright colors and neutral colors. A slip dress like this is an easy way to start a look as it acts as a great base for a number of different layers.

For the sake of this outfit, add a white denim jacket as your second layer. This adds coverage if you prefer more coverage over your arms, without taking away from the look of the dress itself. It’s also the perfect way to add structure to your look, since a silk dress is more organic in terms of silhouette.

Finish your look with strappy black kitten heels, or your favorite sandal. Gold hoops complete the outfit.

8. striped midi t-shirt dress + straw tote + strappy sandals

Shop the Look

Speaking of the best summer dresses, a classic option in black and white is perfect for the lover of neutral colors. This option has a longer sleeve length than the previous dress, if you prefer your shoulders to be covered. A t-shirt dress like this is perfect for slightly more casual looks, while still being extremely comfortable and easy to style.

On especially hot days, sometimes throwing on an easy dress is the best option! Pair a t-shirt dress like this with flat sandals, a chic pair of sunglasses, and a straw tote. This would be the perfect farmer’s market look, or maybe a day of shopping your local boutiques.

9. crochet sweater + light-wash jeans + white t-shirt + slides

Shop the Look

I’ve loved incorporating a pop of red into my outfits this year, and this red-orange shade is the perfect way to pull that off in the warmer months for a fresh look. Style it over a sleeveless blouse or a white tank for an easy style that still looks chic. The nice thing about an open-knit style of cardigan like this is that it doesn’t add too much extra fabric on already warm days.

Weave leather details into the rest of your look, like these woven slide sandals and a tote bag. Tortoiseshell sunglasses reincorporate the natural shades of brown into the look. And if you’re looking to expand your denim picks this summer, try a pair of lightwash jeans in a wide-leg or straight-leg fit like the ones pictured above.

10. black midi skirt + sunglasses + sleeveless tank top + belt

Shop the Look

Monochromatic looks are the perfect chic style to wear when you want to dress up a little this summer. Whether you’re headed out for dinner or to a formal event, this all-black look is as flattering as it is elegant.

First, start with a midi skirt or one in a flattering maxi length. A pleated version like this is often a great choice for those who aren’t comfortable with a look that’s too tight. The A-line silhouette is great for those who prefer some movement in their skirt as well.

Next, add a sleeveless cowl neck tank like the one shown above. Although it may appear more casual due to it not having sleeves, the cowl neck and higher neckline elevate the top. Tuck it into your skirt, and then add a belt to further accentuate your natural waist.

Accessorize with fun pieces like this snakeskin style heel, a sleek leather handbag, and a pair of oversized sunglasses to add a bit of glamour. And if prefer a flat shoe instead, try a classic ballet flat.

11. white short-sleeve button-down + linen pants + mules

Shop the Look

When it came to putting together summer fashions last year, I found myself reaching for linen pieces more often than not. As much as I love summer, I’m not always a fan of the heat! Linen pieces are perfect for staying cool, and therefore one of my favorite additions to comfortable summer outfits for women over 50 who may feel the same way.

Style striped linen pants with a solid top, like this short-sleeved white button-down. Complete the look by playing with texture in your accessories, like these woven mules, rattan earrings, and a leather tote bag.

12. linen shift dress + woven tote bag + espadrilles

Shop the Look

I would be remiss to not include the forever-classic little black dress on a wardrobe list. It’s classic for a reason, and perfect for a summer capsule wardrobe! This dress is the perfect relaxed look for everything from summer vacation to special occasions. The shift dress features a flattering v-neck and breathable linen fabric.
