It’s almost that time of year again – with warmer weather inevitably comes the start of another wedding season! I have to admit, I love attending weddings. Weddings are like a mini family or friend reunion – and you’re there to celebrate the start of a new beginning in a couple’s life. Plus, they’re a great opportunity to enjoy some delicious desserts and hit the dance floor! (Have I ever mentioned that I’m a big ABBA fan?) If that list hasn’t convinced you, weddings are also another good reason to get dressed up and look your best. And if you’re reading this, chances are that you at least love to do that! Keep reading for 13 tips about what to wear to a spring wedding.
1. Layer up in case of chilly weather
As the wedding invitations start rolling in for the season, you might find that some of the first weddings on your calendar land on a chilly weekend. In that case, you’ll want to be prepared. No one wants to spoil their outfit with a last-minute addition that doesn’t fit the vibe you’re going for – planning ahead will be a better option.
Although you could certainly add a classic trench coat for a more casual affair, if you’re heading to a black-tie wedding or somewhere more elegant, you should consider adding a layer to your look that fits the dress code. When it comes to a more formal affair, you can’t go wrong with a silk or cashmere wrap. This will keep out the chill, without detracting from your beautiful dress. You might also consider selecting a wrap or shawl in the same color as your outfit – this will make the added layer look even more intentional!
2. Go for soft pastels in spring
The spring wedding season is your perfect opportunity to lean into a warmer, brighter color palette. Consider bright colors and pastel tones to shine in your wedding guest look. And of course, choose a color that best fits your personal style. This will ensure that you reach for the dress when it comes time for other occasions as well.
One word of caution – try not to match the color of the bridesmaids’ dresses, if you can help it! Although no one will fault you if you do, I always try to stay away from the wedding colors themselves unless otherwise instructed to do so.
This pastel blue number is perfect for a spring wedding – plus, the ruffles are very on trend for spring 2025 fashion according to runways.
3. Find a floral pattern
Some of the best spring wedding guest dresses feature a beautiful floral pattern that would make even the brightest blooms jealous. There are so many floral styles to choose from when warmer weather rolls around, so you’ll have your pick of flower styles, colors, and cuts when it comes to formal wear in the well-known spring pattern.
Keep the rest of your look simple if your dress is making a statement. You don’t want to overwhelm your appearance or let the dress wear you. Think understated and neutral when it comes to your bag, shoes, hair accessories, etc. This will ensure that you still look classy and elegant in your spring wedding guest outfit.
4. Look for lacy options
Little touches like lace can elevate your entire look. Small details, such as a lace overlay or trim, can make your dress more fitting for a formal event. Plus, lace can add texture and interest to a very simplistic design. Even if you prefer a more understated look, a bit of lace can make your dress or jumpsuit more unique and appropriate for spring wedding attire.
5. Follow the dress code
If you ignore all of the other rules in this guide, don’t ignore this one! If this list was ranked by importance, this would be number one. Every wedding is unique, and that means every wedding dress code could be slightly unique as well. Different brides and grooms have different wishes when it comes to their big day, and ultimately, the day is about them. Following their wishes is imperative!
Specific dress codes for wedding guests are becoming more and more common. You might see instructions on your invitation with more details, such as a request for all guests to wear white, shades of a singular color, etc. As weddings become smaller and more intimate across the industry, some brides and grooms are curating their wedding reception for group photos, videos, etc. It can be a fun break from tradition if you receive such an invitation!
6. Repeat: location, location, location
Consider the location of the wedding events when you’re planning out your outfit. A more casual dress code might be called for to attend a garden party reception, while a classic cocktail dress might be appropriate for a country club venue.
Similarly, think about indoors versus outdoors when it comes to location. No one wants to be uncomfortably cold or warm sitting through an outdoor reception, so you may want to pay closer attention to the fabric choice and cut of your look if it is indeed a garden wedding.
Another factor to consider is destination weddings. Depending on the location of the celebration, different cultures might call for a dress code different than you would experience at home. It’s something worth researching or asking the couple about if you’re planning to travel!
7. Choose the right fabric for the season
Fabric type can be a big factor when it comes to what to wear to a spring wedding. Different types of materials can be strongly associated with different seasons. For example, you probably wouldn’t be reaching for a velvet dress in mid-summer or a linen number in the dead of winter. A lot of this has to do with temperature and comfort, but if you live in a temperate climate year-round, this might be something that you wouldn’t necessarily consider right away.
The best wedding guest dresses for spring typically feature lightweight, breathable fabrics. Examples include linen, poplin, cotton, silk, chiffon, and satin. However, don’t ignore the climate of your own venue, either! If you’re up in the mountains, you might need to rethink the typical spring wedding guest dress to adapt for a cold spring wedding.
8. Avoid white and flashy looks
Unless specifically instructed to wear white by the bride or groom, avoid white looks at all costs! Even shades of cream, pale pink or light taupe should be avoided – certain looks might photograph differently because of the light, and you wouldn’t want to notice too late that you appeared remarkably similar to the guest of honor. Of course, other cultures are something to take into account too – brides might wear colors other than white.
You’ll also want to avoid any flashy looks if possible. Although you certainly will want to look your best (who doesn’t?) this is the occasion to leave your ball gowns at home.
9. Remember that comfort is key
Looking your best goes hand in hand with feeling your best. You could be wearing the most stunning designer gown but feel absolutely miserable. Weddings can already be a long day, and you’ll want to prioritize comfort when it comes to an all-day affair.
Think about what fabrics you might be sensitive to. Also, consider the temperature and what layers you might need. Another big factor for me, personally, is having straps on the dress – key for hitting the dance floor. Along these lines, the fit of your dress should be comfortable for sitting, standing, and dancing!
10. Consider which length is best for the event
The appropriate length for your look can vary depending on the formality of the wedding. When it comes to what to wear to a spring wedding, there are certain general guidelines to follow. A floor-length dress is generally appropriate for a formal wedding, such as black-tie affairs. Try a midi-dress for semi-formal events. As for a cocktail-attire dress code, anything from slightly above the knee to a midi length is recommended.
11. Invest in pieces you’ll wear again
I know the temptation well – when special event season rolls around, you might feel pressure to find a new outfit for every different wedding on your calendar. However, a great solution to this is trying to invest in a classic dress that can be worn for a variety of venues, and maybe even seasons. For instance, a midi dress in a dark floral pattern can work well for fall, spring, or summer. Before buying something new for your next spring wedding, take a look at what’s already hanging in your closet or capsule wardrobe.
You can style your gorgeous dress in different ways to alter it for new occasions. Try swapping out a simple pair of pearl studs for a pair of statement earrings. Or, swap out strappy sandals that you wore to an outdoor wedding in the summer for nude pumps to make it more appropriate for a cocktail attire dress code in the spring.
12. Practice your best dance moves when you’re trying on looks
Don’t forget to practice your best dance moves when you’re trying on your potential spring wedding look. Even if you’re not a big dancer, at the very least you should try sitting, standing, and moving around in your outfit (that includes your shoes, too!).
Make sure to check that your dress or jumpsuit is long enough, especially if you’re sitting or standing (this will help you avoid any fashion faux pas). Also, make sure that the straps, or lack of straps, on the top of your look is sufficient. Once you’ve chosen your look, you’ll also want to ensure that you have the proper undergarments for the dress. If you need to get a strapless bra, unlined undergarments, etc. it’s always easier to plan these things out ahead of time instead of last minute!
13. Accessorize with texture and seasonal pieces
Now that you’ve chosen your look, it’s time to think about accessories. One of the best ways to adapt a versatile piece for a spring wedding look is to do so with your shoes, handbag, or jewelry. These little details can go a long way to make your year-round dresses more appropriate for a spring event.
Try a colorful pair of statement earrings, floral touches, or woven textured pieces to get the warm weather look. Nude or white shoes, open-toe styles, or even dressy sandals can be appropriate footwear for spring and summer weddings.
