When it comes to fall fashion, no one does posh style like the Brits. From cozy knits to crisp shirting and classic denim, the English have mastered the ability to layer in an effortlessly cool and polished way that looks as warm as it does stylish. Ready to unpack their laidback, countryside look and cool city aesthetics? Let’s dive right in with 10 autumn outfits inspired by our friends across the pond.

1. light sweaters + utility pants + sneakers + baseball cap + sunglasses + pearls

The English have mastered the art of looks that balance utilitarian function with classic beauty. One of the ways they do this is by creating balance with their layers. They prioritize timeless pieces that are easy to mix and match, and that fit them well. And of course, they always sneak in some elegant accessory that takes even their most casual outfits to the next level – whether that be a timeless handbag, a pair of pearl earrings, or chic sunglasses.

For our first look, start with a double layer of light sweaters. Cashmere is the way to go if you’re working on building a capsule wardrobe full of investment pieces that will last for years to come. Wear one normally, and tie the other around your shoulders for a preppy detail.

Next, go for a straightforward pair of utility pants. These are as functional as they are cool – perfect for a leisurely stroll through the park. Then, add a pair of trendy sneakers, a baseball cap, and sunglasses. For the finishing touch? A pair of pearl earrings for that little nod of sophistication and elegance.

2. button-up shirt + barn jacket + jeans + leather bag + ballet flats

When it comes to cute fall outfits, the English have perfected a “no-fuss look” that still looks polished and put-together. They pair preppy, workwear staples with casual, lowkey classics in order to create a look that feels presentable, but is still incredibly comfortable and lived-in.

For this look, start with a workwear essential – a blue button-up shirt. Next, add your practical outerwear that also feels nostalgic and somewhat vintage – the barn jacket. Up next, go for a classic wash of straight-leg denim jeans. Then, finish your look with two elegant accessories – ballet flats and a leather bag.

3. cable knit sweater + mac coat + jeans + Chelsea boots + cap + tote bag

If you’re stuck when it comes to fall outfit ideas, try reaching for a cable knit sweater. There are so many ways to style your go-to chunky knits in the fall, and a neutral cable knit is one of the best pieces you can have to inspire posh English looks.

Don’t overthink this outfit idea. Keep it simple with your sweater, a pair of jeans, and a Mac Coat (or a classic trench). Add Chelsea boots, a baseball cap, and a tote bag. Now, you have a versatile fall look that you can run errands in, browse the farmer’s market, or meet friends for a morning cup of coffee.

4. half-zip sweater + t-shirt + jeans + hat + watch + bag + sneakers

Do you prefer a somewhat sporty aesthetic? Here’s how to put the perfect English twist on your go-to looks. First, swap out a hoodie for a cable half-knit sweater – this will look a little more polished and has more structure than a hooded sweatshirt. Layer it over a white t-shirt to create interest with the contrast between the two neutral shades.

Next, go for a pair of jeans and white sneakers. Jeans will always tend to look a little more elevated than sweatpants or leggings. Finally, add a plain baseball cap (or one with a very simple logo) in burgundy for a pop of color. A printed canvas bag introduces a new pattern to your look, while a leather watch adds just the right amount of vintage charm. It’s the ideal outfit for running errands and then meeting up with friends for lunch.

5. jacket + sweater + skinny jeans + boots + raffia bag + neck scarf

The English love to create interest in their looks with textures. They tend to stick to a neutral color palette, especially in the fall, so texture is their preferred way to make their outfits more interesting.

Autumn outfit ideas are the ideal way to experiment with this way of dressing. Thanks to the colder time of year, you can add multiple layers to your look without overheating. Make your own outfit edit challenge by trying to incorporate at least four different textures into your look.

Shown above is an example of an outfit with 6 textures. You have a cashmere crewneck paired with denim jeans, a silk scarf, rubber boots, a raffia tote, and a cotton jacket. Even though this look is created with all neutrals, it’s still interesting due to all of the unique fabrics and materials!

6. coat + turtleneck + slip skirt + slingback heels + plaid scarf + shoulder bag

If you need a look for a fall date night or dinner with friends, go for classy staples like a long wool coat, an elegant slip skirt, and a cozy turtleneck. This look will keep you warm while also looking smart. Add a pair of pointed-toe slingback heels to help elongate your legs – the pointed toe will help to lengthen the visual line running vertically down your body. You can also add a pair of sheer black tights to strengthen this effect, especially if the skirt is more of a midi length. Accessorize with a Burberry-inspired scarf and a patent leather shoulder bag to finish the look.

7. sweater + barn jacket + white skirt + tall boots + scarf + basket + sunglasses

A white skirt might scream “summer” or “spring” to you, but you can easily transition it to fall with the help of a few autumn-appropriate pieces. First, pair it with a cozy knit on top. This helps to balance out the breezy look of the skirt. Then, add a barn jacket for added warmth – this is an unexpected layer against the feminine skirt that can give your outfit balance.

Accessorize with classic sunglasses, knee-high boots, a floral neck scarf, and a Jane Birkin-esque basket bag to finish the look that’s perfect for your fall farmer’s market trip or a stroll through your own garden.

8. cable knit turtleneck + satin pants + wool coat + leopard print flats + earrings

Next up is a look perfect for celebrating any fall holidays or get-togethers. If you want to go for a classy look that’s also still comfortable, try starting your outfit with a tonal base. A pair of satin pants and a turtleneck sweater in cream pair well together, and instantly make it look like you put more thought into your outfit than you actually did.

Next, grab a coat. You can’t go wrong with a tailored-looking wool style for fall and winter. This style of jacket will outlast any trends! Add just a couple of accessories and you’re ready to go. Reach for a pair of leopard print flats for pattern, and a pair of gold hoops for classy, minimalist jewelry.

9. button-up shirt + vest + skirt + boots + watch + bag

For an academia-inspired outfit perfect for an afternoon at the art museum, reach for a white button-up shirt and black mini skirt. This outfit is the perfect base for an endless number of posh, preppy looks.

Next, add an English-inspired plaid vest. You can close it for a more tailored aesthetic, or leave it unbuttoned if you want something more relaxed. Then, add a pair of knee-high boots (great for chilly weather), a canvas tote bag (perfect for any gift shop finds), and a leather watch for a vintage touch.

10. sweater + white tee + jeans + bag + sunglasses + earrings + loafers

Need an outfit idea for your next coffee date, or a date with your local bookstore? Keep things simple by starting with a white t-shirt and jeans. Next, layer on a black v-neck sweater. The white tee poking through underneath will add the perfect contrast to your outfit. Then, accessorize with a burgundy bag, timeless loafers, sunglasses, and a pair of pearl earrings to finish the casual look that still feels polished.

Effortlessly Elegant English Looks

The classic English style is perfect for you if you love fall outfits that feel cozy, a little bit preppy, and completely timeless. The English aesthetic may lean on the casual side, but with the right styling, it always looks put together and polished. Even though it’s still early, I’m now daydreaming about styling these looks for fall!

  1. Being British I can safely say that we don’t dress like that except for magazine shoots. You do see the occasional American visiting the Cotswolds in such outfits but they tend to stick out like a sore thumb.
