What if I told you that you could build a capsule wardrobe with only 30 classic pieces? And what if I told you that these 30 pieces would allow you to achieve effortless style and put together dozens of different outfits? The good news is, that is what I’m here to tell you, and it’s not too good to be true. No matter your personal style, you can build a capsule wardrobe over 50 with just 30 pieces to vastly improve your wardrobe options.

As we get older, it can be easy to lose ourselves in our wardrobes. We’ve had plenty of time to accumulate pieces that we absolutely love, but that might mean we lose track of our basic pieces that support a strong style foundation. In other words, we have lots of rooms filled with beautiful furniture and decor, but there might be a few cracks starting to show in the basement! A capsule wardrobe is not meant to limit your fashion choices or take away from your individuality, but rather help to support and style all of the amazing pieces that feel like you.

Building a Capsule Wardrobe Over 50

With that being said, building a capsule wardrobe doesn’t have to be overwhelming! There’s some debate about how many pieces comprise a capsule wardrobe, but the real answer is that it can vary. Personally, a capsule with around 30 pieces in neutral colors hits the sweet spot. It’s enough to reinforce that great foundation, without forcing you to choose between the basics and the pieces that you already own. Ready to get started? Let’s dive in!

TOPS

Cashmere Sweater – High-quality fabrics are very important when it comes to the timeless pieces in a capsule wardrobe. Your capsule pieces are meant to last, and outstay passing trends and fleeting styles. Investing in a quality cashmere sweater is the perfect place to start your capsule wardrobe.

A misconception about cashmere? It doesn’t have to cost hundreds of dollars. Brands like Quince (and many of the brands we love at MCO) offer relatively low-cost, quality cashmere sweaters, or have frequent sales. A lightweight cashmere sweater can be worn almost year-round depending on your climate, and is the perfect layering piece.

White Button-Down – A white, blue, or striped button-down is another versatile piece that will serve your capsule wardrobe well. It can be worn with shorts in the summer, layered under a sweater in the winter, dressed up for the office, or dressed down for a day by the beach. No matter the occasion, a neutral button-down will prove to be one of the most versatile pieces in your closet and can be styled in a near-endless number of different ways.

White Tee – The white tee may just be the one thing you want multiple of in your wardrobe! In fact, once you find your favorite white tee that isn’t see-through you might want to go ahead and buy it in a variety of different neutral colors. Layer it under your cashmere sweater (it will prevent you from having to wash your delicate pieces as often), keep it simple with shorts and sandals, or pair it with a sheer blouse for added coverage. There’s no limit to the power of a white tee in a classic wardrobe.

Lightweight Sweater – A lightweight sweater in cotton or a fine knit can elevate your most casual looks, or pair well with your favorite trousers. Throw it over your shoulder for a French girl-approved look that doubles as an extra layer if you get cold later on.

Striped Shirt – Here’s another classic French wardrobe staple – the striped mariner shirt. A repetitive pattern such as stripes is a great way to add interest to your look, without overwhelming your figure. French women have mastered the timeless style, and their endorsement is a testament to this piece’s staying power!

Turtleneck – You can style a thin turtleneck with your favorite pair of jeans, ankle boots, and a belt, or layer it underneath your favorite jacket for a winter weather statement. For the sake of layering, a tissue-style turtleneck will serve you well. A thicker version will add unnecessary bulk, so a thinner style will be more versatile for a perfect fit.

OUTERWEAR

Cardigan – A lady jacket cardigan is an elegant take on the classic piece that will elevate any look. It can even pair well with lounge pants to take your most casual outfit from shabby to chic. Plus, the gold buttons on a lady jacket help make this piece suitable for important meetings in the workplace, or special occasions.

Black Blazer – A blazer in a neutral color (black, navy blue, or tan are always great go-tos) is the perfect alternative to a classic denim jacket if you’re looking to elevate your style when you turn 50. Of course, there’s still room for your favorite jean version, but a tailored blazer can put the perfect spin of sophistication on your t-shirt and jeans, or business professional look. A good blazer will serve you well from Monday through Sunday.

Trench Coat – No capsule wardrobe would be complete without a trench coat. The timeless trench can pair seamlessly with a variety of outfits and remains consistent on our lists of wardrobe essentials for a reason. Use it to elevate even your most basic looks for a chic appearance. Also, the tie on this Banana Republic version ensures that you can flatter the smallest part of your waist for a perfect fit every time.

Wool Coat – If you’re looking for the perfect coat to wear on special occasions, a classic wool version is your solution. It provides great weight in the wintertime to keep warm, and a relaxed version (like the one shown below) is ideal for layering. Plus, the tie on this specific style helps to flatter your natural body shape.

DRESSES & SKIRTS

Black Dress – A little black dress is every woman’s best friend. Pair it with tights, a white t-shirt and loafers for an academia-inspired vibe, or layer it over a button-down and heels for a workwear-appropriate style. Everlane’s version features flattering tucks in the front and a gentle a-line skirt.

Midi Skirt – As we age, it’s natural that we might wish to have a bit more coverage provided by our skirts. Older women might appreciate a midi skirt as a great solution. Plus, a pleated version offers great movement for a playful, yet mature look. The A-line shape allows for ease of movement while you’re out and about, while also still providing an elegant appearance.

BOTTOMS

White Jeans – Style white jeans all year round for a chic, timeless aesthetic. They look fresh in the spring, and crisp in the winter. Pair them with a black sweater and coat for a dramatic, contrasting look in the colder months or with a striped t-shirt in the warmer ones.

The best quality white jeans aren’t see-through, so pay special attention to the pair you choose! That’s one of the most important things to look for when it comes to light-colored pieces. Great style is all in the details, and this is a big one.

Slim Jeans – Slim jeans flatter every body type. Pair them with ballet flats, a tee, and trench coats for an effortless look in the spring. Or, wear them with a sweater, knee-high boots, and a wool coat in the winter for a sophisticated style. Jean trends come and go, but slim jeans are a classic style that withstands the test of time.

Wide-Leg Jeans – If you’re building a capsule wardrobe over 50, you’ll also want to include a pair of wide-leg jeans. They complement close-fitting pieces on top for a balanced look. Choose a pair in a different wash than your slim jeans for wardrobe variety. However, no matter the color palette you choose, wide-leg jeans add interest to your outfit ideas by introducing a new proportion!

Trousers – Tailored black pants elevate the look of any outfit. High-quality pieces like trousers are an easy way to dress for work with ease. They pair well with your favorite blouse or complete a 3-piece suit with your white button-down and black blazer. You can wear them with heels, or a pair of ankle boots depending on your mood.

SHOES

Heels – Choose a low pair of comfortable, pointed-toe heels to complement nearly any outfit in your capsule wardrobe. Take any outfit from day to night by swapping out your shoes for a pair of heels! Slingbacks are especially flattering. The lack of ankle straps helps to elongate the appearance of your legs. The added top strap on this particular pair also provides a little extra support. Style them with your little black dress for a classic look for date night!

White Sneakers – At MCO, we believe that the right pair of white sneakers goes with everything. The most important thing is to choose a pair with minimal branding and designs. A minimalist pair in good condition will complement your casual looks. Or, they can be a fun way to adapt your elevated pieces (like a blazer or trousers) for weekend wear.

Ballet Flats – A perfectly curated capsule wardrobe over 50 wouldn’t be complete without a pair of ballet flats! They’re comfortable, easy to slip on and off, and add that French je ne sais quoi to your favorite looks. Add a refined, elegant touch to even your most casual outfits.

Loafers – Loafers aren’t just for the office! Pair them with your midi skirt, a sweater, and ankle socks for a classic look. Or, try them with your slim jeans and a button-down for an effortless weekend uniform. There’s no limit to the number of ensembles you can create with a pair of loafers, and a quality pair with good leather will last you a lifetime with the help of a good cobbler.

Ankle Boots – A pair of ankle boots will look great with almost any style of jeans. In the cold winter months, add a bit of edge to your little black dress with black ankle boots and tights. Or, try a pair of wide-leg jeans with a turtleneck and belt for a casual yet chic winter uniform. A leather pair of boots will be easy to protect and clean if you have to worry about snow and ice.

ACCESSORIES

Neck Scarf – One of my favorite Parisian-themed accessories? A delicate neck scarf! It’s the perfect way to add color and personality to a capsule wardrobe over 50. Whether you go designer or stick with a style from Amazon, a neck scarf is an accessory that French women over 50 love to include in their own capsule wardrobes.

Belt – A classic black belt with gold or silver hardware (depending on your preference) will tie your entire outfit together. Match it to your shoes for extra credit! Not only does a belt help add shape to your look, but it can also help you appear more thoughtful when it comes to style. It’s a small accessory, but it can make a big difference!

Watch – A gold bracelet watch will elevate even the simplest outfit. Plus, it’s a practical accessory as well. Put your phone on silent and check the time the old-fashioned way. Be more attentive during your next work meeting or coffee date with the help of this small but impactful addition.

Crossbody Bag – Go hands-free with a classic crossbody bag. The box shoulder bag style from Quince is reminiscent of much more expensive designer versions and is a timeless accessory to finish out any outfit. Dress it up or down for a sleek look.

Tote Bag – Style a tote bag on those days when you’re planning to be on the go! A Longchamp Le Pliage tote bag will hold your water bottle, wallet, phone, lip balm, a Kindle, and so much more. Plus, there are so many colors to choose from! At MCO, we have the Le Pliage and love it.

Ankle Socks – Ankle socks are a great way to add an unexpected detail to your favorite footwear. Have them peek above your favorite ankle boots, or wear them with loafers and jeans to add contrast. Not only are they comfortable, but you can also add a bit of personality to your basic looks by choosing a colored pair. This is something I spied in Parisian street style last fall!

Simple Jewelry – Simple jewelry like dainty gold hoops, a diamond pendant necklace, or a pair of pearl earrings will complement any outfit. Invest in quality pieces that will last for years. The investment will be worth it so that you don’t have to replace them again and again!

Tights – Tights are an easy way to add coverage (and warmth) to your favorite dresses and skirts. In the workplace, they can provide necessary modesty. In the evening, they’re a classy way to elevate your little black dress for dinner and a show! The more opaque the tights are, the less sheer they will be. This is all about personal preference, but the more opaque pairs tend to last longer.

Sunglasses – If you’re creating a capsule wardrobe over 50, you’ll want to include a pair of quality sunglasses! They’re not only stylish but also provide necessary protection for your eyes. A classic black pair or ones in tortoiseshell are especially versatile to complement your other capsule wardrobe outfit ideas.
