If you wake up in the morning every day in the winter and dread putting on “real clothes” to face the wet, cloudy, gloomy days of the season… you’re definitely not alone! Sometimes the thought of dressing up is enough to keep me inside all day long, where comfy lounge sets and pajamas reign supreme. But if you want (or need) to leave the house, the good news is that your casual clothing style doesn’t have to take away from your typically chic aesthetic. Elevated athleisure is a thing, and I’ll walk you through 9 ways to style cute, comfy outfits that still feel put-together.
1. Mix in structured pieces

When you think about your favorite athleisure, you probably think about loose-fitting or flexible pieces that prioritize comfortable wear with soft and stretchy construction. And while these pieces can still make up most of your day-off look, if you want to take your outfit to the next level, try adding a little bit of structure to your look.
You don’t have to go crazy with it, though, or sacrifice any of your more comfortable pieces! One or two more structured items make all the difference. Think a wool coat, a blazer, a handbag with some shape… any of these items will make your relaxed athleisure look a little more polished and appropriate for being out and about.
2. Add chunky gold jewelry

If you want to add a stylish twist to your casual clothing style, just add chunky gold jewelry! Silver also works if you prefer. The point is that adding noticeable accessories makes your look appear more thought-out. Just the indication that you took the time to put on a watch, earrings and necklace indicates a little more care about your appearance and overall look.
Don’t feel like you have to invest in overly complex or expensive pieces to add to your casual outfits, though. Simplicity is always chic! A gold coin pendant a pair of chunky hoop earrings, and a classic bracelet watch are timeless, and will always elevate whatever you’re wearing.
3. Reach for matching sets

A matching set is my current go-to when styling casual looks. And the best part is, you didn’t actually have to buy it as a matching set for it to look chic! Just match the color pretty closely and you’ll get the same effect. Just like we’re always saying that tonal looks make you look more put-together, matching the tones of your quality basics has the same effect.
Besides appearing more put-together, creating a color-coordinated base also makes your layers look more flattering. A matching top and bottoms creates an uninterrupted visual line going vertically up and down your body… which makes you appear slimmer and taller!
4. Opt for sleek, modern sneakers

All athleisure is not created equal… especially when it comes to your sneaker style! While you may prioritize comfort over everything when you’re choosing a new pair of shoes for exercise, your day-to-day sneaker should also reflect your chic aesthetic. If you want both looks and comfort, look for a modern silhouette in a neutral color. This will ensure you can wear them with any of your comfortable pieces, and they’ll fit right in with your overall casual clothing style.
Adidas, Veja, and New Balance are a few great brands to shop for shoes like this! And if you don’t already believe in the power of a bright white sneaker in your capsule wardrobe, just check out this post.
5. Mix and match textures

Whether you’re running from the gym to a coffee date or from school drop-off to the grocery store, you can upgrade your favorite sweats look by mixing and matching textures within your outfit. This adds interest and dimension to your comfy favorites, and makes your outfit look more thought-out.
Instead of opting for all spandex or all fleece, incorporate a variety of fabrics into your look. This gives off less of a workout set vibe and something more aligned with your regular daily casual style. Think a waffle knit tee paired with fleece joggers, a wool coat, and leather accessories. Add some metallic jewelry and a baseball cap for the cherry on top!
6. Add a hat or headband

Good news – you don’t actually have to hit the slopes to partake in the après-ski aesthetic. And although this trend is perfect for winter, you can let it inspire your casual clothing style all year long by taking a look at some of the classic pieces that make up this look.
If you want to elevate your leggings, trainers, and sweatshirt, the secret is all in your accessories. A pair of chic sunglasses, cozy cashmere socks, and hoop earrings can take your look from good to great. And what’s the finishing touch? A hat or headband won’t just keep you warm, but can also add a pop of color or pattern to the rest of your look, and make it look more finished.
7. Swap out sneakers for loafers

Although a pair of comfy sneakers will always look great with your casual clothing style, consider swapping them out from time to time with a pair of loafers. Loafers give you a more elevated, sophisticated look and add polish to the rest of your casual outfit. They look just as good with your leggings as they do with a skirt or trousers! Style them with a cozy jumper, trench coat, and leggings, and you have a posh yet practical look for running errands and styling for everyday wear.
8. Stick with neutral shades

Want to look more put-together in your athleisure? Put down the overly bright colors and designs and reach for more subdued neutrals as well. A pop of color here and there definitely still works, but the trick is to focus more on versatile pieces that give off that feel of quiet luxury. Navy, gray, tan, black, white, etc. will elevate your casual clothing style. These pieces are also easier to mix and match, which makes getting ready in the morning that much easier.
9. Incorporate both high and low pieces
shoes | socks | sweatpants | coat | sweatshirt | sunglasses | earrings
Set your casual clothing style apart by styling both high and low pieces in one outfit. Your more expensive, higher-quality pieces will help uplift your more casual, worn styles to balance out your look. And your “high” pieces don’t have to be designer! Think elevated pieces in nice fabrics like cashmere, items that have a bit more structure, etc., to help offset your less-expensive leggings and sweatpants.
