Great style isn’t just for special occasions – the best sense of style is found when you’re confident in your everyday wear. It’s really all about being able to get dressed in the morning without getting stressed or hating half of your wardrobe. Great style is about experimentation, loving what you already own, and feeling amazing in what you put on your body! If you’re ready to own your style over 50, you’re in the right place. Get inspired by these 13 casual summer outfits for over 50.

1. white button-down + striped tee + linen pants + sneakers + belt + sunglasses

The best summer wardrobe is full of pieces that make it easy to create chic yet comfortable looks. Neutral colors, breathable fabric options, and light layers will ensure that you can put together cute looks that also combat the summer heat.

When it comes to dressing over 50, layers are key to ensuring that you stay comfortable all day long, even as you move in and out of air conditioning. This first look is the perfect example of a layered outfit that won’t cause you to overheat. First, start with a breezy pair of linen pants in a neutral color. On top, layer a striped tee under a linen button-down. An open button-down in a light fabric is the perfect replacement for your favorite sweater in the warmer summer months.

Keep your accessories casual. Reach for a white sneaker, thin belt, shoulder bag and a classic pair of sunglasses to complete the look.

2. striped dress + denim jacket + baseball cap + shoulder bag + sandals

Midi dresses and maxi dresses are a great foundation to casual summer outfits for over 50. They’re easy to throw on, and comfortable to wear throughout a busy day. Plus, if you prefer to keep your legs covered, they accomplish this without making you too warm.

Start this look with a sleeveless striped midi dress. On top, add your favorite denim jacket. Accessorize with a baseball cap to keep the look fun and casual. Then, finish things off with a pair of leather sandals and a coordinating shoulder bag.

3. white blouse + midi skirt + woven bag + sandals + gold earrings

Flowy midi skirts are another great choice if you want to style chic casual summer outfits over for over 50. There are so many choices to choose from. If you want to mix things up, swap out your go-to white poplin skirt for one in mustard yellow. On top, an eyelet blouse in white adds texture and interest.

Introduce another new texture to your look with a pair of brown leather sandals, and a woven bag. Complete the ensemble with classic gold stud earrings.

4. chambray shirt + linen pants + straw hat + tote bag + boat shoes

This next casual outfit is perfect for a morning run to the farmer’s market. Stock up your fridge by shopping for local produce in a pair of navy linen pants, and a chambray button-down. As for shoes, boat shoes are trending this year and add the perfect touch of the nautical aesthetic to your summer outfit.

Accessorize with two straw pieces for a seasonal twist – a straw hat will keep the sun out of your eyes while you browse, and a spacious straw tote will hold all of your goodies in a sustainable way (plus, it’s easy to clean).

5. bucket hat + linen shirt + white shorts + bucket bag + boat shoes

Spend a day by the water in this chic, East Coast-inspired outfit idea. First, start with a breathable button-down on top. Then, add a pair of gauzy white shorts on the bottom. You can’t get much more comfortable than this combination – the shorts have a drawstring so that you don’t have to deal with an uncomfortable waistband while you’re trying to enjoy your day.

Lean into the nautical aesthetic with your accessories. Boat shoes are the ideal shoe, and comfortable to walk in. A bucket hat is a playful touch and doubles as important sun protection. Finally, a boat tote is spacious enough to hold snacks, your book, and sunglasses for a relaxing day by the water.

6. denim top + white pants + gold earrings + gold cuff + sandals

If it’s too warm to reach for your favorite denim jacket like you did when there were still cooler temperatures, try swapping it out for a denim tank top instead. You still get the structured, classic look of the denim jacket without the added weight or heat.

Next, swap out your favorite white jeans for a pair of white linen pants. Mature women often enjoy easy pull-on pants because the drawstring makes them adjustable, and can be tailored to how you’re feeling throughout the day. Plus, on hot days, they’re way more comfortable than a stiff pair of jeans!

Accessorize with a supportive pair of sandals. This pair is great because of the ankle strap around the back, which is also adjustable. Finish the look with chunky gold jewelry to make this minimalist look fit your personal style.

7. linen shirt + straw hat + sunglasses + white shorts + belt + sandals + tote bag

Ready for a chic look for your next lunch spent outside at a bistro table? You can’t go wrong with a classic black-and-white color combination if you want to elevate your casual summer outfits for over 50. You can still look polished in warmer weather with the right pieces.

First, start with a classic black blouse or button-down. If you’re someone who prefers to keep their arms covered, a breezy button-down in poplin, cotton, or linen will ensure you don’t overheat. On the bottom, try a pair of white shorts. The contrast between the two items will look great.

Keep your accessories neutral for a timeless look. Black sandals, a straw tote, oval sunglasses and a straw hat round out the relaxed look that still looks elegant.

8. button-down + midi skirt + sunglasses + gold watch + sunglasses + sandals

If you struggle with summer fashions, you might want to start employing a summer capsule wardrobe. This will ensure you have quality pieces that are easy to mix and match, and always have a few go-to outfit combinations you can fall back on when you’re not sure what to wear.

A blue button-down and a white skirt are two great pieces to kick off a capsule wardrobe. Plus, they pair beautifully together! You could style them in numerous different ways. Leave the shirt unbuttoned and untucked for an off-duty model look. Tuck the shirt in for a flattering silhouette that highlights your natural waist. Or, layer the shirt over a white tank and leave it unbuttoned for a slimming look that makes you appear taller.

You can also build out your summer capsule wardrobe with a few key accessories. Classic black sunglasses, a gold watch, and black leather sandals are all great additions to consider.

9. striped tank + denim jacket + tote bag + white shorts + fisherman sandals

You don’t have to reinvent the wheel to get a fresh look this summer. A simple color palette of white, blue, and black can go far in summer fashions! First, start with a pair of bright white or blue denim shorts. On top, reach for a tank top in a classic pattern, like stripes. Over that, you can layer your favorite jean jacket. Accessorize with fisherman sandals, and a woven tote to finish the look.

10. sleeveless blouse + floral skirt + belt + shell earrings + espadrille flats

Do you love a pop of bright colors for summer looks? Try a flowy skirt in floral prints. Vibrant patterns are a great way to draw attention to your favorite features. The trick to elevating this look is to keep the rest of your outfit simple, and neutral. On top, try a ruched sleeveless blouse. This gives you a flattering silhouette and also works well with a belt to accentuate your natural waist.

Accessorize with fun nods to seasonal dressing with a pair of raffia flats, and a pair of gold shell earrings. You’ll still get all of the summer vibes, but in a chic, classy way for this casual look.

11. tank dress + sweater + boat tote + gold earrings + boat shoes

Casual dresses make casual summer outfits for over 50 a breeze. Plus, they’re a great foundation if you don’t know where to start with layering. With one piece you instantly have a great base for your outfit.

Make this basic tank dress more interesting by tying a striped sweater over your shoulder, for an instant Parisian touch. Accessorize with a white canvas boat tote, and a pair of boat shoes. Finish the look with a pair of simple gold earrings for a French girl-approved look with a laid-back vibe.

12. button-down + coordinating shorts + pearl earrings + raffia tote + sandals

When in doubt, you can’t go wrong with a tonal outfit for an effortless look. A monochromatic look is great because it looks like you spent much more time getting dressed than you actually did – and you’ll instantly look polished in a coordinating top and bottoms.

Add interest to this easy summer outfit formula with texture. Leather flat sandals and a raffia tote bag with leather details are a perfect solution. As for jewelry, you can add an understated, yet elegant touch with a pair of pearl stud earrings.

13. sleeveless collared shirt + white skirt + tote bag + ballet flats + oval sunglasses

shirt | skirt | ballet flats | tote | watch | sunglasses

Last, but not least, play with the preppy aesthetic by pairing a sleeveless collared shirt with a feminine white skirt for a go-to outfit formula. This easy combination is comfortable, yet modest. For another preppy touch, try tying a sweater over your shoulders in case it gets chilly indoors, or if you run cold.

Choose luxurious but practical accessories. Cap-toed ballet flats are chic but easy to walk in, a gold watch will keep you on schedule, black oval sunglasses are on trend but will also protect your eyes, and a leather tote bag will hold all of your necessities with room to spare.

Great Style in the Summer Months

It can be easier said than done to create cute outfits in the sweltering summer months – but it is possible! 1. Love all these outfits! Not quite in my 50’s yet but will be wearing these outfits this summer.

  2. A great article. I’m in my seventies and with a few small omissions or changes (not short shorts, but long shoÅ•ts instead) and no baseball caps ever (I’m English and don’t personally find them a good look at all), I would wear most of these outfits. We rarely get really hot weather and your ideas for cover-ups are helpful. Well done.

    1. Love to hear this! Fashion should be about making the changes you need to make the outfits work for you, so I’m thrilled you’ll be able to adjust these so you can feel stylish and confident. Thanks for the support!
