However, what differentiates a flat charcuterie board from a successful one is not only about choosing the right ingredients. It’s also about how artistic you dare to organize them! Here are some elements you don’t want to miss if you want to make an original charcuterie board:

Play with colors: Imagine your wooden table as if it was a painter’s canvas. Choose a wide selection of foods that represent a color palette and distribute them here and there on the board, creating a beautiful design. Fruits, veggies, and nuts are your friends. Don’t be afraid to change their positions one time and another for the bonus of a prettier presentation! But be careful, if you make the most beautiful thing then you won’t want anybody to eat it. 😉

Play with surprising ingredients: At the center of your table, you can put an ingredient that is unusual in your area. For example, a unique spread that is served in another country. Or some wild ingredients such as edible flowers! They can be bought at any gourmet store. Otherwise, you can always find edible flowers in a nearby garden or forest. Look for these ones: lavender, calendula, rose, hibiscus, and chamomile. If you stick with me you will be surprised with another surprising ingredient that I chose for our today’s charcuterie board. 

Play with textures: Your guests will love the variety of textures. Remember: If they wanted everything soft they would just eat soup! Choose crunchy ingredients like raw celery and carrot, bread crackers, or nuts for a little bit of texture. Complement them with more liquid textures such as nut butter, olive oil, butter, or a spread (tartinade). Below you’ll find a very quick idea for an olive spread, known as tapenade in French. keep reading!

Play with flavors: Another important rule is to alternate between sweet (fruit, jams) and salty (sausages and cheese) flavors and fresh (fresh fruit) or drier (dried fruit) feels.

Play with dinnerware sets: Along with the specialty foods, the real magic of what makes someone’s board impressive is the presentation of their charcuterie board. You can save your high-quality porcelain, you won’t need it! Just play with little plates, bowls, and wooden surfaces.

Types of Cheeses for a Charcuterie Board

Cheese is one of the world’s most popular appetizers. Thus, the cheese lineup is the easiest way to draw attention to our board. But which cheeses to choose for your cheese plate?

I recommend that you focus on a minimum of 3 different options. In my case, I let it play like this:

1. I choose a cow’s cheese that is matured, with a fine texture and a mild taste, such as a Comté, a Beaufort, or a Gruyère (although there are some Gruyère made in Switzerland others are indeed made in France).

2. I then choose a cheese with a more particular and strong taste. For example, ash-coated goat cheese, sheep cheese, or blue cheese.

3. Lastly, I like to finish my selection with a soft cheese that has a little bit of a spreadable texture, such as Brie, Camembert, Saint-Marcelin, or Reblochon.

With this selection, I guarantee that the cheese table will be interesting and that everybody will be able to make many combinations together with the vegetables and fruits on the plate. Remember that cheese has its tasting order, just like wine!

If you don’t live in an area with French cheeses available, don’t hesitate to make a selection with the best local options around. All cheeses are welcome on a cheese plate! Visit a local farmers’ market and let the cheesemakers recommend to you their best options.

Raw Honeycomb: The Perfect Addition to Your Charcuterie Board

For today’s board, I have decided to put a hearty chunk of honeycomb at the center. Straight from the beehive! Raw honeycomb boosts your immune system and provides you with many essential vitamins and minerals, besides having the sweetness of regular honey. In addition, it will be a sweet temptation to which all hands will stop during the meal.

And it’s so beautiful!

As an extra, I’m sharing with you the recipe for an olive tapenade. The easiest spread that you can share in a small bowl on your fancy charcuterie board.

Charcuterie Board With Honeycomb Recipe

Ingredients
  

For the olive tapenade

  • 2 cups green olives pitted
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley
  • ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium garlic clove
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon capers

For the honeycomb charcuterie board

  • 12 slices Salami
  • 3 slices Ham
  • 1/2 cup Paté
  • 1/3 cup Pistachio butter
  • 1/3 cup Edible flowers
  • A variety of cheeses (Ash-coated goat cheese, Brie, Comté)
  • 2 Boiled eggs
  • 1 piece Honeycomb
  • 1/2 Pear sliced
  • 1 cup Grapes
  • A Handful of Bread sticks
  • Olive tartine

Instructions
 

For the olive tartine

  • In a food processor, combine all ingredients and pulse until well chopped and creamy.

For the charcuterie board with honeycomb recipe

  • Choose a mid-sized wooden or marble board.
  • Cut cheese in slices and place the different cheese types on opposite sides of the board.
  • Fold salami and ham in a ribbon or flower shape, using a tiny bowl as a container. Place the meats on different sides accross the board.
  • Fill the gaps with the rest of the ingredients. Play wil colors and organize the foods to make them stand out.
