Embracing the Capsule Wardrobe Concept

Warm weather or cold weather, no matter the season, creating a capsule wardrobe is the trick to streamlining your wardrobe and dressing in a classic way, especially for those over 50 living where the sun loves to linger a bit longer.

If you’ve never heard of a capsule wardrobe before, it’s a concise collection of timeless pieces consisting of neutral colors and accent colors that can easily be paired together.

Think of your own personal capsule wardrobe as your secret weapon. Each piece is not just a piece of clothing, but a much-needed weapon in your style arsenal – ready to mix, match, and create an array of looks that fit any occasion life throws your way!

The beauty of curating a capsule wardrobe lies in its simplicity and efficiency. Imagine starting each day with a clear mind and a closet that reflects exactly who you are – no fuss, no muss.

It’s about zeroing in on those go-to items that not only speak to your soul but also keep you comfortable as the seasons subtly shift from hot to just-a-tad-bit-cooler. (Because we know it never really does cool down, does it?)

This method of mindful curation is also a celebration of your personal style. Taking a step back from filling your closet without real intention, you shift to shopping with purpose. By selecting pieces that seamlessly transition from day to night, from casual to formal, you’re not just dressing for the day ahead; you’re dressing for life.

So, if your closet is overstuffed at the moment yet you still feel as if you have nothing to wear this autumn, a fall capsule wardrobe is your answer.

Before you start shopping for new pieces, first, the best thing to do is a wardrobe audit. See what clothing items you already have that can work for the new season. This practice will help you take stock of what you have, setting you up for success when it does come time to shop strategically.

Once you’ve identified what you’re missing, good news, it’s time to go shopping! The goal? Classic pieces in mostly neutral colors that are also good quality.

The biggest challenge is usually figuring out what to wear, but don’t worry, we did that part for you!

But first, these are the fashion tips you need to help you craft the perfect fall capsule.

How to Dress for Fall in a Warmer Climate

1. Focus on Fall-Ready Colors

Dressing for fall in a warmer climate doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the seasonal vibes. If you can’t manage to wear the usual fall pieces, like a chunky sweater or a trench coat, because of the heat, you can still dress up in light summer silhouettes instead.

Lightweight sweaters, linen button-downs, lightweight scarves, and shirtdresses are some examples of pieces to include in your closet for older women. To bring that fall touch to your wardrobe, choose these summer pieces in fall-ready colors and earth tones.

Think olive green, mustard yellow, burnt orange, navy blue, and black, to name a few. Focusing on fall colors is a great way to dress for the fall season, no matter what you’re wearing.

You can also pick your favorite neutral base color and add flattering fall accents – like a beautiful chocolate brown or a rich burgundy. These touches of fall colors can make any outfit feel instantly more in tune with the season, even when the weather says otherwise.

2. Opt for Fall Prints

Even a lightweight summer piece can look like a fall item when it’s in a fall print. Choose your breezy summer silhouettes (like flowy dresses) in prints that make you get in the fall spirit – think moody florals, plaid, and leopard print.

Don’t forget your accessories either! Incorporating fall prints through accessories like scarves can capture the essence of fall fashion as well.

3. Choose Materials Wisely

As you know, choosing materials wisely is crucial in a warmer climate. Fabrics like linen, lightweight cotton, and breathable blends allow you to layer without trapping in heat.

If your weather allows, a thin, breathable trench coat can add a layer of sophistication to an outfit without the bulk, keeping you comfortable and stylish.

Any heavy fabrics that are too heavy to layer on as outerwear, such as a suede coat or a leather jacket, can be used to accessorize. Suede shoes or a leather tote bag make great accent pieces for your fall wardrobe.

4. Modify the Classic Fall Pieces

As you know, there are some clothing items that are the epitome of fall, such as a chunky sweater or a ribbed long-sleeve tee. You may not be able to wear that in your climate, but you can wear a ribbed tank or a cashmere cami.

To achieve the sought-after classic style, think of the classic items that are too hot for you to wear and find the appropriate swap that you’d be comfortable wearing.

For example, a thick sweater may be too warm, but take the sleeves off (not literally) and now you have a sweater vest!

5. Create the Fall Look With Your Makeup

Lastly, to complete your fall wardrobe, consider switching up your summer makeup routine and opt for darker hues instead.

Instead of a pink lip or coral blush, opt for a caramel lip or burgundy cheek color (or the closest shade that flatters your skin tone). Fall makeup will be the perfect finishing touch to your fall looks!

Essential Pieces for a Fall Capsule Wardrobe (Over 50)

TOPS

Lightweight Sweater – If heavy fall layers are out of the question due to your warm climate, choose a lightweight sweater in a fall-ready color instead. A cashmere sweater is a surprisingly good choice, as it has natural properties that can keep you cool. This simple crewneck has a versatile fit and you can style it by tucking it into straight-leg jeans or draping it over a tank top.

Linen Shirt – You may think summer is the perfect time to wear linen, but if you live in a hot climate, your perfect time is all the time. This wardrobe staple boasts a lightweight linen fabric that is ideal for warm climates. The simple swap? Instead of choosing a linen shirt in a summer color like white, get one in a fall-appropriate color. Gold, bronze, khaki – these neutral shades still give a rich feel. A linen button-down is also a great option too.

Basic Tees – From a black shirt to a white shirt, no fall capsule wardrobe is complete without these versatile pieces! Whether you pair your t-shirts with black pants or slip skirts, you can style them in so many different ways for all different seasons.

Open-knit Sweater – If you feel left out in the fall because you can’t wear chunky sweaters like your Northern friends, throw on this open-knit sweater instead. It is made from a mesh-like and breathable fabric, which is perfect for warm climates, but still has the look of a classic fall sweater. Wear a simple tank top underneath and dress it up with tailored shorts and sneakers for a casual yet elegant look, or pair it with blue jeans and sandals.

Sweater Tank – Much like a white shirt, a sweater tank is a foolproof pick that will form the backbone of your fall capsule wardrobe. This pick is made from 100% cotton – this is ideal if you experience fall in warm climates. Plus, the white base color will look exceptionally stylish with black pants or when layered with a denim jacket.

Sweater Shell – Similarly, a sweater shell offers a chic layering piece that pairs flawlessly with everything from tailored bottoms to casual denim. Thanks to the turtleneck detail and sleeveless silhouette, this top gives off a sophisticated look that won’t have you overheating. You can also swap out a sweater shell for a sleeveless sweater vest if that is more your style.

Striped Shirt – A striped shirt is an impossibly elegant piece to include in your fall wardrobe as it will stand the test of time. You can team up your long-sleeved shirt with tailored shorts and white sneakers for a casual chic look, or you can pair your top with jeans and flats for a Parisian chic look.

Tank Tops – Tank tops are your underlayer secret weapons, offering a smooth and light base, or they can be worn on their own for hot days. This casual piece can also be worn with black jeans or skirts for effortless style.

Outerwear

Denim Jacket – Appropriate outerwear is still a good idea in warm climates, and for good reason. A woman needs layering options, after all. Versatile pieces like a denim jacket help you to style different looks and when the weather changes or cools down, you’ll be ready.

Duster Cardigan – A duster cardigan is a great example of balancing fall style with warm weather. Lightweight layers can really elevate your fall looks! This outer layer features a long silhouette and would look chic paired with anything from shorts to jeans to skirts to dresses.

Dresses

Midi Dress – Welcome in the fall vibes in a beautiful floral dress. The moody florals are fall-appropriate and feminine – the perfect pick for a fall wedding guest outfit, church, or Thanksgiving look. Dress it down with ankle boots or white sneakers for a casual chic look.

Maxi Dress – An easy way to create fashionable, classic, and modest looks is with a maxi shirtdress. More versatile than you think, this little black dress can be dressed up or down, for whatever is on your fall calendar. Wear to special occasions or a casual brunch, this item screams simplified style and can be mixed and matched with all the shoes in your capsule wardrobe.

Bottoms

Midi Slip Skirt – This midi slip skirt lends an easy chicness to any fall look. The dark florals scream fall while the ultra-soft material is the perfect fabric for hotter climates. To make your outfit look proportional, pair your midi skirt with a fitted top – like a tank top or a striped tee – to see you through autumn.

Trouser Shorts – If you have an extra humid fall and don’t want to sweat profusely in pants, it’s a good idea to add shorts to your capsule wardrobe. These ultra-long shorts can flatter your body type and provide extra coverage, all the while offering a chic fall look.

Black Jeans – Every wardrobe needs a good pair of jeans, and there is a good reason why black jeans are a must-have in a fall capsule wardrobe. You can pair them with virtually anything in your capsule wardrobe – from ankle boots to a lightweight sweater! You can easily transition these into your winter capsule wardrobe as well.

Blue Jeans – A good pair of jeans is one of the most important things to have in your own capsule wardrobe. This timeless piece is one of the top wardrobe essentials – no matter where you live! In chilly weather, you may pair these with chunky knits and boots. In warm weather, you can pair jeans with lightweight tops and sandals for elevated-casual styles.

Wide-leg Pants – Wide-leg pants allow for a little airflow, and thanks to the wide silhouette, they’re not stiff and uncomfortable, making them a good option to wear. Consider adding a slightly cropped pair to your wardrobe as well – perfect for showing off your chic fall shoes.

Pull-on Pants – One of the most comfortable and dependable pieces to have in your fall capsule wardrobe is pull-on pants. Every closet needs some casual pants for casual looks, and if black leggings aren’t your speed, then let me introduce (or reintroduce) the handy pull-on pants. You can style them in many different ways to look effortlessly stylish – whether it’s with a black basic tee or a tank top.

Shoes

Ankle Boots – Don’t forget to add this classic pair of shoes to your fall capsule wardrobe! You can put together several versatile outfits with ankle boots, from a striped shirt with black jeans to a lightweight sweater and tailored shorts. If your weather allows, consider adding a pair of knee-high boots to your own closet. They are not just for younger women; older women can also rock a pair!

Flats – Ballet flats or Mary Jane flats, you can never go wrong with a neutral pair of classic flats. They will be your best friend in the fall because you can always depend on flats to give all your fall outfits a chic flair.

Clogs – Sure, you might feel too hot to enjoy a pumpkin spice latte during your fall, but there are perks of a warm autumn. You can slip on a pair of these cute clogs to accompany your fall looks. The open back allows some airflow and won’t overheat your feet. On chillier days, pair them with a pair of ankle socks for a quirky cute look.

Sandals – Don’t retire your sandals from your summer capsule wardrobe just yet! In tropical climates, sandals are a must-have piece – just look for a pair in a dark autumnal color to ground your look. These can balance out heavier pieces and even be a key item in your travel capsule wardrobe.

Mules – Add a pop of color and a bold touch by accessorizing with leopard print mules. You can use these mules to add some interest to your black jeans and black tee outfit combo, or pattern mix with stripes or florals. Though as of late, leopard print might fall under the category of the latest fashion trends, however, leopard print is always a great idea.

Sneakers – Sneakers are a key part of your capsule wardrobe because every wardrobe needs a comfortable (yet stylish) option. Your best bet is a classic white pair, but don’t be afraid to get in the fall spirit and choose one with some earthy accents.

Loafers – Loafers are easy-to-wear shoes that will be your favorite choice for making a fall outfit look smart and sophisticated. Accompany them with wide-leg pants and an open-knit sweater for a polished fall outfit, or shorts and a sweater tank for a preppy look.

Accessories

Bracelet – A simple bangle doesn’t take up much real estate on the arm, but it’s just the thing you need to add some style. Use it to dress up a denim jacket or wear it with your black dress for a special occasion.

Sunglasses – Shield the sun in style with these chic sunnies. You can never go wrong with a classic black cat eye because it’s oh-so Parisian chic.

Crossbody – It’s a good idea to have a reliable crossbody bag that can take you from day to night. This pick can complement a wide variety of outfits while adding a chic, designer-inspired touch.

Belt – Cinch your look together with a classic belt. Use it with your jeans, to add shape to your duster cardigan, or to add shape to your maxi dress.

Lightweight Scarf – Autumn may be the time people start to break out their go-to chunky scarves, but if you live in a warm place, then chunky scarves are a big no. To still have an accessory that adds style to your outfit, opt for a lightweight scarf instead. If you want to introduce some personality, consider adding a colorful scarf to your wardrobe.

Tote Bag – Even though wearing heavy fabrics may not be a good idea, you can still “wear” thicker fabrics for your tote bags. Invest in a suede or leather tote bag to style with all your pieces of clothing from your capsule wardrobe.

Earrings – Simple and sweet and whether silver or gold, small hoop earrings can elevate your outfit and add an extra special detail.

  1. Oh I really appreciate this post. I moved down south this summer and I’m not used to such warm temps this time of the year, nor how to dress for it.

    1. I found this extremely frustrating! I clicked on the post because I like the outfits only to find out it was all “similar “ dress, shoes, shits, etc. and was it just me but the similar links where not similar! Now I have to remove this from my pins!

      1. When this post was published last year, all the links were the exact items. Unfortunately, clothing retailers don’t always keep the same items in stock and the best we can do is find the most similar looking item. Better than leading to a broken link!

  2. Thank you so much. You are right. The calendar may say fall but the temperatures in the upper 80’s do not. (But hey, it cooled down from upper 90’s!). This capsule is a much better fit for here. No roasting in chunky knits even though they are so cute.

  3. I live in the southeast and we don’t fall weather until November. My biggest problem is I’m cool toned and warm tones look horrible on me. It is so hard, not just for fall, but really all the time to find cooler toned clothing. I’m thinking colbat blue, burgundy, berry colors, and cool greens.

  4. Good job! This is the first post I have seen addressing Fall in 90 degrees + 90 percent humidity! Welcome to Houston, NOLA, etc. I wish that when the outfits are put together they were photos of a person wearing the clothes instead of the flat photo of clothes. It is the standard on blog post, but a girl can wish!
