Just because you’re headed somewhere casual doesn’t mean you can’t also create a chic look and feel your best. The trick is to look put together, but not too overdressed for the occasion. Although, it’s always better to be a little overdressed than underdressed! If you want to create stylish and sophisticated casual outfits, the 11 tips below will guide you so that you can always feel like a million bucks, even in a t-shirt and jeans.

1. Mix elevated and casual pieces

Alright, here’s our first lesson in creating sophisticated casual outfits. If you want to avoid being overdressed for a low-key occasion, try mixing and matching your relaxed and elegant pieces. This will create balance in your look so that you still feel put together without feeling like you’re dressed for the wrong event.

For example, if you want to dress up your basic t-shirt and jeans, add a workwear-inspired piece, like a blazer. The blazer will instantly make this look more sophisticated. Next, add a pair of ankle boots with a kitten heel instead of sandals or sneakers. This will help to complement the elevated look of the blazer. Finally, add a coordinating shoulder bag with a bit of structure and a simple pair of gold hoops to complete the ensemble.

From brunch to casual Friday at the office to cocktails, this look will serve you well! And the best part is, you can mix and match the color scheme depending on what you already own, or what you feel best wearing.

2. Wear well-fitted items

One of the best ways to elevate your casual looks is to ensure that all of the pieces you choose to wear fit you well. If you want to look sophisticated, carefully select items that are proportional, aren’t too baggy, and aren’t too short or too long. Although most of us certainly love a slouchy pair of sweatpants at home, if you’re headed out and want to look elegant, you want to save those for the living room! Instead, opt for a pair of straight-leg jeans – these will look much more appropriate.

On top, balance out the high-waisted pants with a slightly cropped lady jacket worn over a white tee. This combo will elongate your legs and create a flattering effect. The jacket is slightly boxy, but it works when paired with the slim fit of the jeans. Then, finish your look with timeless accessories like cap-toed ballet flats, a quilted shoulder bag, and a gold watch.

3. Create tonal looks

Creating a tonal or monochromatic look is one of the easiest ways to instantly look more put together. And this principle applies to casual outfits, too! Creating a look with a coordinating top and bottom makes it appear like you put way more effort into getting dressed than you actually did. As a bonus, it also creates a slimming effect with one uninterrupted visual line running up and down your body.

You can even use this theory to elevate a beach-ready look. First, start with your monochromatic base of navy linen pants and a rollneck sweater. Then, add a navy woven tote and sandals. Complete the look with a straw hat to introduce more texture to your look, and for the benefit of sun protection!

4. Embrace a neutral palette

A neutral color palette is timeless and always looks classic. If you want to upgrade your sophisticated casual outfits, lean into a basic color palette of neutral tones. Even if you’re just wearing pajamas or a sweatsuit, a neutral color will automatically make you look more put together. Plus, if you use a capsule wardrobe, creating neutral looks is a breeze.

Style the look above for a chic brunch outfit with friends. First, start with wide-leg or straight-leg jeans in a classic wash. Next, add a white button-down. Then, reach for a neutral pair of sandals. I like to mix in texture here with a woven shoe! Next, you can introduce another new texture with a suede tote bag. Finally, complete the look with a neck scarf and a pair of small gold hoop earrings.

5. Keep accessories minimal and elegant

Accessories are powerful when it comes to styling sophisticated casual outfits. If you want to elevate your casual looks, keep them classic and minimal for a chic appearance. A few pieces you might want to include in your collection are a pair of pearl stud earrings, small gold hoops, a simple pendant necklace, a bracelet cuff, an elegant watch, or a tennis bracelet.

Beyond jewelry, a box-style or top-handle purse, a chic pair of sunglasses, or a French-inspired neck scarf can all be used to make your low-key outfit look more intentional and put together.

6. Use the wrong shoe theory

If this theory is wrong, I don’t want to be right! One of my favorite ways to make a casual look more elevated, or an elegant look more laidback, is to use the wrong shoe theory. This theory is essentially what it sounds like – choosing a shoe that is unexpected when it comes to the rest of your outfit.

If you want to make a look appear more casual, go for a white sneaker. They’re still a classic choice, but they will make a satin slip dress look more appropriate for daytime wear. On the flip side, if you want to elevate a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, add a pair of loafers to instantly upgrade the outfit.

7. Prioritize classic pieces over trendy ones

Another way to instantly look more put together is to put the trends aside and lean into classic pieces – even if they’re on the casual side. These items will give you a timeless appearance that feels more elevated, even if it’s just a t-shirt and jeans. For instance, a denim jacket over a black tank dress certainly isn’t revolutionary.

However, the simplicity of it, as well as the fact that it could fit in during so many decades, makes this combination a go-to if you want to look a little more classy when you’re dressing down to run errands or go shopping.

8. Limit branding

cardigan | pearls | loewe bag | sandals | skirt

Designer items can certainly elevate your look, especially if they are quality, well-constructed pieces. However, try to limit branded pieces (designer or not) if you want to elevate your casual looks. Wearing too many logos at once can look messy and make you seem like a walking billboard! If you want to wear branded pieces, stick to one or two brand names at most.

For instance, if you want to wear sneakers, try styling a plain white pair that’s not branded with any specific sportswear logo. And if you love a designer straw bag with a logo on it, make sure that it’s not competing with any other logos in your look. This will also help to contribute to a streamlined, put-together appearance.

9. Don’t forget about the little details

Beyond the pieces that you use to build an outfit, don’t forget about the little details that are so important to elevating your look. Clean pieces that are free from holes, rips, stains, and wrinkles will help to make your casual outfits look more put-together, even if it’s just a coordinating sweatshirt and sweatpants. Take the extra few minutes to iron, lint roll, or steam your pieces. It will make a world of difference!

10. Layer with care

striped tee | jeans | flats | trench coat | sunglasses | bag

You can use smart layers to balance out your casual and elegant pieces. Your outerwear acts as your first impression, so if you want to elevate a laidback look like a t-shirt and jeans, try using a classic style, like a trench coat, for an instant upgrade.

You can also use your footwear to complement your outerwear. Instead of sneakers, match the trench coat’s vibe with ballet flats. A structured shoulder bag and chic sunglasses complete the look.

11. Add a belt

Last, but not least, the simple act of adding a belt can change the presentation of your outfit. Wearing a belt makes your outfit appear more thought-out and intentional. Plus, a belt can help make your accessories look more cohesive if you choose a coordinating color that matches your shoes, bag, etc.
