When going to Rome (or any other huge destination), some people may skip the big iconic places because they don’t want to deal with tourists. These spots are famous for a reason, so don’t miss out on what could be a cool experience. Instead, use these tips on how to get the most out of Rome and the iconic places!
How to Get The Most Out Of Rome’s Iconic Places

#1. Go early! Like, really early
I can’t stress this one enough. If you want to enjoy an iconic place without a billion other people around, then you’re going to want to get there pretty much when the sun rises.
I got to the Trevi fountain around 6:30 am and there were already 20-30 people there and girls hogging up the best photo spots 😉 That was 6:30 am, people!

I went to the Spanish Steps in the afternoon and it was pretty crowded, even for a rainy day. People bumping into you with their umbrellas is really not the best time!

#2. Try to keep an eye on the weather
Even though you can’t control the weather, try to avoid these iconic places if it’s going to be rainy because well, it’s not that fun to be standing outside cold and wet.
It was raining when I went to the Spanish Steps and I don’t think it improved the experience 😉 To me, the pull of the Spanish Steps would be sitting, eating gelato, and people watching. Well, without the ability to sit in the sun with gelato to people watch you’re just…looking at steps.

#3. Be prepared
Piggybacking on tip #2, sometimes it’s going to rain even if you thought you were in the clear! Be prepared by bringing an umbrella with you.
If you don’t, there are vendors selling them if you’d rather buy one. It’s funny though, because all of those umbrellas look the same and you can easily spot the people who were prepared and who weren’t! 😉

#4. Try to see it from a different angle
Most iconic shots are all taken from the exact same place. Try walking around and exploring a bit to not only be able to take in this spot in a different way, but have a unique perspective in your photos that you’ll bring home!

#5. Be on the lookout for scammers
I have a whole story about scammers that I’ll be sharing in a later post, but be aware that people will try to give you something “free” in these heavy tourist spots. Nothing is free. Do not accept!
Though I never experienced any pickpocketing myself, just be smart and keep bags zipped and valuables out of pockets unless you’re going to keep your hand in there with it.
Getting something stolen would definitely not be getting the most out of your time here. Though, the pickpocketers got the most out of you! Ha. Sorry, not funny.
#6. Don’t forget to soak it all in
Here’s my most important tip, though easier said than done. Make sure you take a moment to actually enjoy it!
Sometimes you can’t stop the photographer in you, and that’s okay, go ahead and snap all the photos that you want. But don’t walk away right after that! Put the camera away and really take in the beauty that you’re seeing!

You may find that some spots are worth it and some are not worth the hype, but either way, I hope you use these tips on your next trip on how to get the most out of Rome!
When it comes to these famous and iconic spots, whether in Rome or not, do you like to check them out or do you avoid them like the plague?

I love Rome! It is like being transported back in time a little bit. So many interesting spots to check out and culture to learn about. I took a night tour when I was there so the experience was different seeing it at night vs the day. It was a walking tour so I was able to learn about all the good spots at night and the vibe is always different.
