Plaid is a classic print so it’s “in” all the time, but with fall right around the corner you’ll be seeing more and more of it. Retailers are going to be highlighting plaid shirts as their fall essentials and well, they’re not wrong. Do you have already have a plaid shirt and don’t know how to wear it or are you considering buying one but want to make sure you’ll get lots of wear out of it? Read on for my tips on how to wear a plaid shirt!
What type of plaid shirt to get
Good news- all ages can wear plaid! Whether you’re 13 or 75, there’s a style for everyone. Consider what type of plaid shirt you’ll get, as each one gives a different look. A red and black plaid shirt/buffalo check (especially flannel) is more traditionally thought of as a fall and winter top, while a black and white shirt are more classic colors and you could wear it throughout spring as well.
There’s no right or wrong. Get one style or get them all! Just something to keep in mind as you plan out your outfits.

Quick styling tips
- You can wear your plaid shirt as more than just a stand alone top! Layer it under a sweater or jacket, tie it around your waist, or wear it open and over a tee.
- Get creative and mix different prints and textures. Plaid looks great with camo and leopard print, as well as textures like sequins and faux fur.

Hi Carolyn,
I like the looks you chose but question one aspect. You show brown footwear with black handbags and the opposite. You also show white sneakers with a black/brown bag that, IMHO, doesn’t work. I also like to match my belt color to shoes and purse. Care to comment? Thanks and happy Autumn-
Thanks for the feedback, Wren! I personally mix brown and black a lot and think it’s a fashion rule that can be broken! You can check out that post here. That being said, it comes down to personal preference and if you want to have all your shoes and accessories match, that’s good too. 🙂
How terrible is it that I only own two plaid shirts? My goodness, I need to up my game, that’s for sure! I’ll be adding some plaid to my closet this autum for sure. Thanks for this inspiration!
You’re welcome, Stephanie. Can’t wait to see you wearing your plaid!
