Preppy style has always been one of my favorite aesthetics – it’s timeless, classy, and has the perfect amount of polish. But that doesn’t mean it’s boring, either! There are plenty of patterns and colors that can be woven into your preppy outfits, and preppy fashion has a wide number of silhouettes to play with and layer. If you’ve ever wanted to create more preppy outfit ideas with pieces from your current wardrobe, I’ve put together 10 looks to help you get started.

1. blazer + button-down shirt + trousers + loafers + belt + earrings

Many preppy outfits feel right at home in a professional environment, like the office. That’s because preppy styles often have a lot of overlap with business casual dress codes. Think classic button-down shirts, pleated pants, midi skirts, loafers, blazers, timeless sweaters, etc. These pieces could fall within either category of dressing, which makes it easy to style preppy-inspired looks for your next work day.

If you’re planning an outfit for your next big meeting, try starting your look with a pair of pleated pants. These always look professional and tailored, which in turn makes you look more put-together. On top, layer a button-down shirt underneath a blazer. A belt, leather loafers, and a structured bag add polish to your corporate chic look.

2. rollneck sweater + denim mini skirt + boat shoes + socks

J.Crew might just be one of the best retailers to shop if you’re looking for preppy clothes. Their classic aesthetic is the perfect place to start if you’re looking for quality pieces that will not only stand the test of time when it comes to wear, but also the trend cycle.

For instance, their classic Rollneck Sweater is reintroduced every year – sometimes with slight design variations. Whether you like the striped version or a solid style, this piece is a great addition to a preppy-inspired wardrobe. There are so many ways to style it!

Dressing for a casual weekend day out? Pair it with a denim mini skirt (or jeans, if you prefer), leather boat shoes, crew socks, tortoiseshell glasses, and gold hoop earrings. If you want to wear it in a slightly more elevated way, style it with a longer skirt, or maybe even satin pants with ballet flats or loafers.

3. plaid shirt + trench coat + earrings + jeans + tote bag + ankle boots

When it comes to women’s preppy outfits, there are certain patterns that can really make your look! Plaid is one of those patterns. This classic design comes in a wide range of different colors and variations, so you can find one that suits your personal style.

In the fall, pair a plaid blouse with another autumn staple – dark-wash jeans. The front pockets on this pair add a nostalgic, vintage-inspired touch. Layer on a trench coat to keep warm, and add leather ankle boots to introduce a new texture to your look. A suede tote bag does the same, and gold hoop earrings are the cherry on top.

4. pleated skirt + rugby shirt + oval sunglasses + loafers + crew socks

Rugby shirts may be trending, but that doesn’t mean they’re a new style! This type of shirt has been around forever, and also fits right in with a classic English aesthetic. The sportswear was first adopted as casual wear by college students in the 1950s, but then became part of the preppy uniform in the 1970s and 80s. Rugby stripes had a resurgence in popularity in the late 90s and early 2000s, and now they’re back again for more time in the spotlight.

If you want to lean into the 2000s preppy aesthetic, pair them with another essential from the Y2K style era: the pleated skirt. Thankfully, they’re no longer as micro as they were back in the day – the mini length is much more manageable, and some are even closer to knee-length. You can always pair your rugby shirt with jeans instead, but if you want to go for a bolder look, try the skirt option! Crew socks, suede loafers, and chic oval sunglasses are the finishing touches on this preppy outfit.

5. striped sweater + button-down shirt + pearls + sunglasses + jeans + loafers

If you prefer a more classic preppy look, look to your fall and winter capsule wardrobe for inspiration. This outfit idea can be created with pieces that are probably already in your closet for an easy outfit idea when you don’t know what to wear. Preppy chic outfits don’t have to be complicated!

When it comes to your top, reach for a shirt or sweater with navy blue stripes – this is another classic pattern for preppy looks. Then, layer it over a white button-down and straight-leg jeans. This style of jeans will pair well with your loafers. As for your accessories, keep it simple and minimalist – tortoiseshell sunglasses, pearl earrings, and a small Longchamp tote bag are all you need.

6. barn coat + sweater + mini skirt + knee-high boots + earrings + bag

When it comes to preppy outerwear, a barn coat is the perfect addition to your fall capsule wardrobe – especially in plaid! This staple coat is ideal for in-between temperatures and seasons, just like the trench coat. Plus, the plaid pattern adds a preppy touch to the classic silhouette.

If you want to elevate the look of your barn jacket, try styling it with a cashmere sweater and mini skirt in neutral colors. Knee-high boots will help to add extra coverage and warmth for your legs, and a structured purse in black will complement both your shoes and gold jewelry.

7. blazer + turtleneck + jeans + watch + tote bag + oval glasses + pearls

Vintage preppy outfits favor classic silhouettes that are as practical as they are chic. Think collegiate looks from the 50s and 60s – this aesthetic was polished, modest, and practical, but didn’t lack style either!

If you like an elevated, classy look for your preppy outfits, try reaching for a plaid blazer. You can dress it down with a pair of jeans, but it still looks put-together when layered over a black turtleneck. Reincorporate black throughout your accessories to tie your look together, and add a pair of studious-looking blue light glasses in tortoiseshell to round out your ensemble that would look right at home in a library or bookstore.

8. cardigan + gingham pants + headband + watch + handbag + t-strap flats

Women in Paris are buying gingham shirts and pants this season – these also happen to be great pieces that you can use to style preppy outfit ideas. For a French-inspired look and all of the preppy vibes, pair black and white gingham pants with a cardigan. Then, go for a pair of nostalgic shoes – like t-strap flats from Sam Edelman. Keep your accessories simple, but also vintage-inspired. A vintage watch (or one that at least looks vintage) is perfect, and a thin headband along with a top-handle handbag completes the look.

9. pleated midi skirt + sweater vest + button-down + loafers + watch

skirt | shirt | sweater vest | loafers | earrings | bag | watch

I’ve already included a few miniskirts on this list, but if you prefer a longer length, this look might be for you! A pleated midi skirt gives you a similar preppy look, but with a more modest feel. If you’re dressing for colder weather, this style would also be ideal. If you’re ever lacking inspiration for preppy outfit ideas, think about school uniforms! These can help you to create your own preppy uniform with your graduated adult style.

You can also reach for a few workwear staples – like a white button-down shirt and navy sweater vest. Loafers will always feel at home in old or new preppy style, and a suede bag adds texture. A gold bracelet watch and gold and pearl earrings round out your look that would work for the office or the weekend.

10. polo shirt + v-neck sweater + watch + tote bag + skinny jeans + tall boots

jeans | boots | shirt | sweater | bag | watch

If you like preppy vibes but also prefer a more casual look, reach for your skinny jeans – yes, they’re still stylish, no matter what anyone says! It’s all about how you wear them and what you pair them with. For instance, skinny jeans and tall boots will always make for a great outfit combination, and will give you a classic, equestrian-inspired look.

On top, reach for another Y2K staple – the polo shirt. This layers well underneath a v-neck sweater, which lets your collar and buttons poke through. Accessorize with a Longchamp Le Pliage tote bag in navy and a gold bracelet watch. Now you’re ready for a casual Saturday spent running errands (or maybe doing a little fall shopping for fun).
