I can’t think of a single woman that doesn’t have a pair of leggings in her closet. Whether you wear them around the house or out and about, leggings are extremely versatile. Not only that, but they’re comfy, practical (perfect for adding extra warmth to your outfit on a cold day), and well, pretty much a wardrobe staple! Although this popular style is most often used for the gym or as loungewear, it can absolutely be elevated. My favorite type of outfits to wear with leggings are the ones that are chic, stylish, and cute. So here are 6 fashionable ways to wear black leggings. All of these ideas will make you look put together in no time. No gym outfits here!
Ways to Wear Black Leggings
1. Leggings + plaid dress + boots
One of the first things to remember when styling your black leggings is to avoid shorter tops, and a great way to do this is with a short dress such as this one. This is the perfect outfit combo come fall, and you can customize this look in many different ways!
Switch out the plaid dress for a long chambray shirt or add a denim jacket. Brown boots go great with this look, but ballet flats will also do the trick. This look is very versatile, so just switch up how you wear it when you want to.

2. Leggings + basic tee + a long cardigan
So, one popular argument about leggings is whether they should be considered pants or not. My answer? Yes and no. While they are thinner than most pants and don’t leave as much to the imagination, they can still be worn for everyday wear with a bit of extra modesty. Enter the long cardigan!
This is the ultimate casual look for when you’re wanting to be comfortable, yet put together. Wardrobe staples like a white shirt, long cardigan, and (of course) classic black leggings are all extra cozy, but elevated accessories like a black tote and loafers add just the right amount of elegance. Be sure to pick high-quality and comfy fabrics and go for neutral colors to really go for that more refined look.

3. Leggings + sweater dress + flats
This next outfit is an oldie but a goodie. While there’s nothing too crazy or unique about this outfit, sometimes a great go-to outfit doesn’t need any changes! You can always count on this look for the days that you want to look polished and put together, but without sacrificing comfort. Also, feel free to bring in some bright colors and patterns through your shoes or sweater dress.
I love this combo of mustard yellow and leopard – it’s so perfect for those chilly fall days. A long sweater or top is a good choice for this look too if you’re looking for something that’s not as warm. Just try and make sure the hem is long enough so it covers everything up!

4. Leggings + basic tee + oversized blazer
Although leggings are usually associated with laid-back comfort, with luxe details, you can turn this look into one that’s street-style chic. One great way to add style to a pair of black leggings (or any outfit for that matter) is an oversized blazer.
A plaid version adds a great preppy vibe and makes for the perfect cool look when layered over a white tee. Add in a black headband and a pair of classic black shoes and you having a winning outfit that looks very “New York City”.

5. Leggings + shorts + blouse
If you’re looking for something more eclectic and high-fashion, this outfit is an interesting option. This unique sheer top, leather shorts, and tall boots make for a cool and modern take on this typical “ankle boots with a sweater” outfit. Not to mention that pairing some black tall boots with black leggings will make your legs look super long!
If the leather shorts with leggings are a bit too bold for you, you can also always go for a leather mini skirt for a similar look.

6. Leggings + oversized sweater + boots
You just want to cozy up now, don’t you? Sometimes it’s best to go with the classics and nothing defines fall more than a chunky oversized sweater and leggings. But, when heading out, pair this outfit with chunky combat boots for a cool take on this typical “ankle boots with a sweater” outfit.
This would be a great choice for fall and winter everyday wear (depending on where you live). Also don’t be afraid to mix patterns, i.e. a leopard scarf and striped sweater.

As you may have guessed, the right leggings can be worn in countless different ways! Try pairing your black leggings with some of the following items for your own fashionable look:
-a fitted dress
-a flared skirt
-a t-shirt dress
-a bodycon skirt
When it comes to finding the perfect leggings, you can’t go wrong with solid black, like the ones you see in this post. Furthermore, go for a pair that’s the right thickness. You don’t want to accidentally give anyone a sneak peek, but a pair that’s too thin may be uncomfortable in a warmer temperature. Always go for cotton fabric if possible, as they will offer much more comfort and breathability. You’ll also want to think about the rise – high-waisted is probably the best option, as they’re more flattering and comfortable.
While we all love our leggings for the gym or loungewear, leggings can be surprisingly chic when paired with certain items! You can wear them with so many different things that you probably already have in your wardrobe and elevate them to the next level. If you’re looking to even further elevate the way you wear leggings, consider going with a pair of high-quality faux leather ones. These are perfect for adding a little bit of luxe to your overall look. Spanx makes a very popular pair.

I like the leggings and plaid dress!
It’s one of my favs too!
These styles are all very cute but living in California’s warm climate we rarely need sweaters or jackets…maybe for 2-3 months only. How about some ideas for temps of 75-100+ degrees that we have the other 9 months?
Working on a post for this!
It may be helpful for you to look at summer outfits instead of winter since you live in a warm climate state.
I lived in California all my life and I wore leggins in the winter. The westher in San Diego gets cold and leggings were my go to. Now I live in the East coast and somedays leggings aren’t warm enough. I do like the chic look.
The weather in California varies and it does get cold, especially at night. Leggings were my go to in San Diego. This post is about what to wear in the cold, so this post dosent apply to you. Don’t ask the author to accommodate you. Move along and find another post that fits your weather.
Im short 5’2 and at 140 do you think someone at my age 67 and short could dress in blk Phyllis
Hi,
I really like the way you put things together. I wonder what advice you would give someone who has shoulders. I find most drop shoulder tops look awful. I have athletic arms. Don’t think Olympian or anything! I am sort of busty, at least I look more so since my rib cage is a stronger one. I am 5’5 15.5 shoulder, 32 bra band, 36 chest, 28 waist and 36 hips. Shapely with muscle. I gave you that to really see what I mean. I find stylists assume top heavy when shoulders are mentioned but it’s a mesomorph, not pear shape body that nobody styles. So frustrating that women bigger than me look smaller due to smaller top. Would love advice! Bathing suits too. Thank you!!!!!
Phyliss, I’m just 2” taller and wear leggings all the time. Wear with long tunics, short dresses or long cardigans. They are slimming, chic, trendy and make you look taller. BTW, I’m also 3 years older, so don’t let your age make you think you can’t look sexy!
ABSOLUTELY! The most important things to wear are a smile and confidence! You got this!
I wear leggings with tunics. They cover my oversized bum and I feel less self-conscious. It helps that I’ve accepted myself as a sexy, curvy, plus sized 50+ woman.
All of these outfits are really cute but for women of a certain age (haha) dealing with hot flashes these aren’t really possible.
I see London.
I see France.
I se leggings
Failing to be pants.
Ha!
